Max rpm of the l15a7

Sooo had a missed shift today resulting in me spinning the engine to what I guess was around 8500rpm....

Caught 3rd on the up shift at redline in 4th... No gear grinds just went in and I got the clutch half out when it ever revved and I promptly put it back in and caught 5th ASAP.

Anyways, no check engine lights, car seems to drive fine, and the valve train seems as noisy as ever.... Which is really noisy....

Anyone ever dip into what these engines are capable of spinning to "safely"?

My oil life is at 20% so as soon as my mustang is off jack stands (new suspension setup) I'll drain oil and check for sparkles. But yeah I'm slightly worried. I don't know if I'm tired and just used to my intake or if vtec isn't engaging. Car pulls fine still so it has to be working but I'm not sure. I think I'm just scared and think it isn't working Hahaha....

My girlfriend was in the car and says its fine but I know how mean rpm can be. But hey, if my old 1985 Toyota corolla gt-s could run 8000 rpm all day my fit can survive a split second at 8500 right? Fml car only has 22000 kilometres on it...

listen to your girlfriend... its fine. accidentally over-revving once in a LONG while won't kill the engine.

the reason that redline is there, is to prevent you from CONSTANTLY over-revving. that increases wear (long term) and temps (short term). if the piston or chamber overheats, the metal can expand enough to prevent the piston from moving... and that will cause the rod to bend (among other potential issues).

I've over revved a few times (going from 5th to 2nd instead of 4th, trying to pass on the expressway). I'm not worried.

You can't over-rev the L-15 on upshift because there is a built in RPM cut off before the damage point which is above the redline.

UNLESS you DOWNSHIFT into a lower gear or two and let out the clutch then it may manually over-rev because of the physical forces involved with the spinning fly wheel. It still may hit the cut off but still get over-reved because the stored energy is causing the over-rev not too much throttle.

Thanks for the reassurance! Thats quite the over rev on your car too so mine should be fine!

And loudbang I "downshifted" on my up shift. Went from 4th to 3rd gear instead of 5th gear....

Oh well only time will tell I guess. I plan on trading my Fit for a 1 ton truck in the next few years. Life and my drift car require one. So as long as the little engine can last me another 80-100k I'll be happy!

If it didn't blow up immediately you're fine. You can stop worrying

If it was a full commit 5th to 2nd instead of 4th your post would read a little differently or would be a WTB L15 post in the classifieds

ive hit the rev limiter several times on my '12 while accelerating. reason being i can't really see where the redline really is on the gauge cause it's small and the red is not very visible...and im trying to squeeze every bit out, i guess cause the car isn't really fast for me.

unless you mechanically over rev'ed while DOWNSHIFTING (ex: into 2nd instead of 3rd or 4th at 60mph+), your car is fine.

That's what happened, he accidentally shifted to 3rd at the top of 4th instead of to 5th.

I threw my GD into second at like 65 or so once. Car was fine, probably similar over rev to yours, car was no scare.
