I'm such a nerd I tend to take each road on my normal route a different way to try and find the 'sweet spot' on the mpg's. I try not to speed or go way too slow, but the hills around here can kill you if you don't pay attention to what you're doing. The lucky thing about the Fit is that its heavy enough to make the downhill slopes 'coastable' enough for the next uphill climb not to kill the mpg's.

Pordy - Sounds similar to my travel for work drive. Car does well on that. Delta - that's funny because coming home over the mountains, I tried to be smarter going up. Got 40.6 this time. 1100 miles and 39.8 average, including some bad weather, mountains, bumpy roads but at least 1/2 flat, open 4 lane. Very excited because I almost went w Yaris to get the mileage, but Fit has more space and a better drive. Mileage is a huge plus. Enjoy being a mileage nerd! Let us know your tricks!

I usually average around 40mpg with mostly highway driving. Had mine for almost 5 years and it has been pretty consistent.

What is strange to me is that the EPA rated MPG is way lower than what I've experienced (and apparently others too) - it is rated 27 city/ 33 highway - seems closer to 32/40 - and I always thought EPA ratings were generous and didn't reflect real life driving (even after the 2008 revised methods). I'm not a hypermiler of any sort -- given I'm coming from a car that was closer to 17/24 MPG (premium fuel to boot; 19/26 EPA ratings) and that I don't drive more than ~6000 miles/year -- fuel costs isn't an issue for me.

PatM- how is the dependability?
DeltaBond-Yes, manual. It's all I've ever owned. Why do you ask?
Pordy-Sounds nice. I like to live rural, so income usually requires a fuel efficient, dependable car. I agree, though. I shied away from the Fit cause of EPA, until I got on the boards. Fuelly averages agree w EPA, though. Glad it's doing as good as my old corolla did!

Pordy - That's cool. And about the same mileage, if your Sig is correct. Very different altitudes, though.
Alpha - sounds similar.

Mini Pearl, I asked because I was under the impression that the gear ratio on the manual transmission was a little different than the automatic. My fiance's manual gets a few MPG's more than my automatic, so I was curious if that was across the board.

DeltaBond that's interesting. I was told the automatic was slightly more fuel efficient in the 2013. I'm not disappointed at 40 MPG. As good as my 2001 Corolla MT.

2010 Fit AT Base: If I'm unconsciously driving, then 29 or 30 in mixed driving.

If I'm hyper vigilant, then close to 40. But that's driving to weirdly.

If I drive with some forethought, but not too much weirdness (like 40 MPH uphill on the highway), I can get 35ish.

Got my best mpg tank ever tonight - 41.5. Not sure why it was so good. Very rainey so drove a bit slower due to having a brand new clear bra and just a lot of water in the road after dark.. I'm at 40 mpg average at 1,800 miles. Woot!

Cool wet weather is the best condition for a car's engine.

The manual at 3,000 rpm will be going about 63 mph in 5th. The automatic at the same speed will be turning 2,250 rpm.

The gear ratios (with the final drive included) are:

Gear -- manual -- automatic
1st -- -- 0.715 -- -- 0.657
2nd -- -- 0.404 -- -- 0.368
3rd -- -- 0.282 -- -- 0.234
4th -- -- 0.205 -- -- 0.167
5th -- -- 0.157 -- -- 0.121

You can see that 5th gear on the manual is pretty similar to 4th gear on the automatic. In top gear, the engine with a manual spins 33% higher than the automatic, or conversely, an engine with an automatic spins 25% slower than the manual.

The manual is very well suited to my usual driving. Yesterday, however, I went about 30 miles on a road marked 55mph and could watch my MPG shrink as I drove. I started at about 44 MPG on the display and ended with less than 43. The display has been inaccurate, but I'll have a fillup within a week to check.

2010 Sport w/AT. I've got almost 33000 on it now, mostly drive a 'metro mix' and average 31-33. for mpg, the car is very sensitive to tire pressures (2 lb's down and I'm down 2 mpg), AC use, and my right foot (of course)

2012 Fit sport manual 29k so far, 2012 average 33 mpg 2013 average 32.9 mpg this is great considering the EPA highway is 33 mpg. This is with roof racks, kayaks, A/C, not driving overly conservative (more of an aggressive road rage driver) driving the car 24 hours straight for 1,600 miles one way with luggage and passengers.
