Interesting on the gear ratios - manual vs automatic. Also - yes, it was cool and damp. Not anything we see real often in the Western high desert. But, hey, I'll take it. Next comes cold and darn cold.

 

33mpg with mix of hwy/cty. I am curious to see how good the 2014 is as the fit is not much better than the rest of the lineup.

 

36-37 city and 40-42 on highways, given the fact that I drive like an old lady....lol

only change was i drove my GE on the expressway over the weekend vs driving all surface roads.

~35 mpg mixed.

What changed? I started working an early shift three days a week and the freeways are emptyish at 4AM

 

 

In the city I get mid to low 20's. Highway ranges anywhere from 35 to 42 on the Los Angeles freeways. It tends to vary a lot depending on how much traffic I hit.

My city ratings are lower than others. Having a 3 mile commute each way doesn't give much time for the engine to warm up.

 

I was a bit frustrated web I was getting only 19.5 in my short commute (4 miles) through oakland but I was keeping in mind that its almost all stop and go and when I CAN go, I have to keep it under 25mph (cops sit and ticket) which is a bit under the sweet spot.

I then read something on here that said this car is about momentum. I have been reworking my driving style- getting up to speed a bit quicker vs. slowly crawling up to speed.

My mpg have been steadily climbing.

 

my automatic downshifts in a heartbeat on a hill (especially with the ac running), but I have to say I cruise around 70-75. and a headwind just works the car that much harder.

since my mileage is on the low side, I have to ask: how fast do you cruise on the highway? is it flat or hilly? or windy?

 

My high desert rural commute - I set the cruise at 65. It saves road wear to the car, as well, if I keep it in the limit. Lots of semi trucks and just big ranching vehicles. (Sometimes at night now, deer and slick roads, I do 60 and my MPG is a bit better.) I really don't want to hit a deer anytime soon.

Do you have to deal with the Nasty Nimitz commute? I do it daily but just keep it in gear and idle in 2nd or 3rd, don't use the brakes, I get ~40mpg from Hayward to Silicon Valley (880S -> 237W). I will leave three or four car lengths in front but i'm not one of those people with a 1/4 mile of space in front of them... super irritating.

Momentum is right, just avoid the brakes if you can. I also had to consciously change my driving style to fit the car, it took me a little while too.

 

I live in alameda and it's a total ticket fest in the morning. :-)

I come through the tube and into downtown oakland for work. The light timing on Harrison is near impossible to do anything but stop and go. :-)

Bah! Still, door to door and up the elevator it's still only a 20 minute commute.

 

One item that helped my mileage is another gem someone on this forum mentioned. If you coast in neutral or with the clutch pressed then the injectors need to fire (i.e. you use gas) but if you coast in gear the injectors will shut off entirely as long as the engine RPM is above about 1,500.

I often use a high gear to reduce the amount of engine braking. I want to build momentum on the downhill but also shut off fuel if I can.

Seem to be a large number of tidbits of information that'll help improve mileage.

 

I only got 38.6 tonight for my week's travel (300 mi). My tire pressure light is also on today (drove 130 miles on low tire pressure today) because we dropped another 15-20 degrees since I last aired up (low 20s last night). Huge hurry to get to work today and cold/ dark commute home. I'll air up tomorrow.

Any recommendations for winter PSI? We get down to -10 (-20 w wind chill) by January. I hate waiting for the light to tell me because my commute days are long enough. I'd rather stay a step ahead.

 

the last time my light came on, I had a tire down 6-7 pounds. up here in north country, we see similar temps. I just keep it at 33 psi year 'round, adding air in early winter and releasing it in spring (if I have to). that keeps the tire working right with the right-sized contact patch. That works well for me.

 

Thanks Jim. Light came on first time after I had the car 3 days and the dealer made sure it was fixed. So, I hope I'm not down that far in a month. I'll check tomorrow. We get colder tonight. I walk tomorrow so will check them cold after work then air up.

 

I finally had a fillup under 40mpg: 39.76. My previous worsts were 42.14 and 42.17. Total average is down to 43.69.

I did pass more cars than usual last week including some in fairly short sections of dotted yellow line. (The DOT is making more of our roads solid yellow and shortening the dotted sections.) There seem to have been an unusual number of drivers seemingly asleep at the wheel.

 

Great mileage Sprocket. Any tricks?

My worst mileage seems to follow trips where my commute is hurried or I'm driving up the side of a mountain over 10 k. My average is 39.8 at this point - 2k miles. No bill from Honda yet. Due Monday. Call dealer tomorrow.

 

2008 average since new is 31mpg mostly all urban driving.
1988 hatch 36 mpg average.
