OEM versus aftermarket elements in stock engine air cleaner
OEM versus aftermarket elements in stock engine air cleaner
Has anyone compared the OEM and aftermarket air filters for the Honda Fit (stock air cleaner box only) to see which offers better filtration efficiency? I have been told that for a number of Toyota models the OEM is definitely preferred because it is double-layer (better filtration) while all the aftermarket options are single-layer, but I don't know whether a similar distinction exists for Hondas.
I am trying to map out air filter maintenance for the family 2009 Honda Fit. It has almost 51,000 miles and has had two filter replacements already--OEM (dealer) at 27,000 miles and aftermarket with part number A4055 (quick lube shop) at 44,000 miles. Quick Googling suggests that A4055 belongs to Mighty Auto Parts, which also supplies oil filters for this particular quick lube shop, and is a munging of the Champion number for the same part. One way or another, I'd like to get this off-brand trash out from under the hood, but I'm willing to go for an aftermarket option that is clearly superior to OEM.

For catching small size particulate matter, I don't think you are gonna beat OEM.

Something I've noticed (upon removal) about some aftermarket filters is the gasket around the edge often is dislodged, deformed, or squashed and pinched, or is too thin and can't seal against the housing it is in.
