For one thing... what is it you're worrying about in the first place? Rubbing? Extra forces on the wheel hub? Track width?
For rubbing, tires, suspension and just how hard you smash yourself into a pothole matter just (or more) as much as offset. A super stiff suspension and/or avoiding ALL bumps like the plague will allow for ANY offset. Narrower tires and/or lower PSI in the tires could allow for some lower offset.
If you're worried about additional forces on the hub, then it would be best just to stick with OEM offset (good luck finding aftermarket wheels with +53).
As for track width, probably best just to stick with factory wheels, period. That and the forces on the hub are engineering level of consideration that you either follow or don't.
There are probably more things related that I can't think of, off the top of my head...
For my experience, I have 16x7 +43 RPF01s... and they will rub the back tires on the fender if I have too much weight back there or hit particularly bad potholes/bumps. I mean, there's a ring along the outside of my tires showing that it rubbed.
Edit: forgot to add tire size I'm using on the RPFs, Conti DWS 06 205/50/16.
