On those, the owners manual specifies 5w-20 oil, but part way through the life cycle of that generation, Honda switched to specifying 0w-20 for new Fits. Somewhere (can't find a source), Honda then specified that our 2009 Fits could use 0w-20 or 5w-20. The engine hadn't changed a bit, so as someone else said, I think it was more a matter of 0w oils becoming more available and Honda recommending their use to improve fuel economy. I found this article from consumer reports that appears to support this view:

https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...cars/index.htm

I believe the engine in the current Fits is still the same 1.5L, essentially unchanged from the previous generation. Based on that, I'd say 5w-20 oil is not going to do any harm and would just result in very small increased fuel usage while the engine is cold.
In the US, starting with the 2015 models, the Fit has a new engine. Model number L15B1. I believe the old engine was L15A but I'm not sure. Both engines had 1.5 liter displacement but the new engine has slightly greater compression, torque, power, yet and at the same time slightly better fuel efficiency. In other countries, other engines are available. The old engine had port fuel injection. The new engine has direct fuel injection. As far as the oil goes, I do think the engine should be fine with 5W-20 even tho the spec is for 0W-20.

At one time I had a 2010 Toyota Matrix .Except for some differences in the appearance of the body, and the passenger compartment, the Pontiac Vibe was the same exact car. They each had the same Toyota engine. Interestingly, Toyota's owner's manual said use one grade of oil; Pontiac's manual said use another grade. So much for "stick to the manufacturer's recommendations."

Just throwing in some random 2 cents...

i have an 09 and was using 0w20 for the first year..i switched to 5w20 and noticed a drastic reduction in oil consumption (blow-by). only negative i have noticed is cold starts in the morning, especially in the winter, require a second longer on the ignition (or 2 quick attempts) to start the car up.

ill be sticking with 5w20.

Isn't 5W20 the recommended oil for your car to begin with? Why were you using 0W20?

because thats what the Honda dealer that I bought the car from put in it pre-purchase. i just rode it like that figuring either it wasnt a big deal, or they made a mistake on the invoice. it wasnt until after switching it personally to 5w20, at the due interval, that i noticed the differences.
