Anyone have experience replacing a cracked 2020 Fit EX Head Unit?
Hey guys,
My girlfriend was moving some Ikea furniture that had to be placed in between the driver and passenger seat and put her breaks on and it broke her head unit console. The outer plastic isn't broken and neither is the actual LCD screen, it looks to be just the capacitive touch screen.
We're just curious about options on fixing this cracked screen/head unit. We're on a tight budget so we want to do this as inexpensively as possible, but we need to get this done whatever it takes.
We know that the head unit comes as one piece, so we're going to have to replace the whole thing.
So here's the questions we had:
Is this something that only dealerships can do, or can a 3rd party mechanic do it?
Would we be able to get the work done by a 3rd part mechanic and then get the unit activated at a dealership?
Can we source an OEM head unit ourselves from eBay or salvage, or does the head unit have to be brand new?
Should we bother looking into aftermarket head units, or should we stick with a straight OEM replacement?
Unfortunately that post doesn't help me much, as it seems that his actual screen broke, like the LCD, which is a simple replacement. He did have issues with a security code after installing a brand new unit, which is the entire crux of the very specific list of questions I asked after I tried to do research.
The screen in mine did not break, the capacitive touch screen did, which is glued and attached to the inside plastic, so it's not an easy DIY replacement.
Seems like you've already answered your own question.
To be fair, that answers zero of the questions I specifically asked in my post, and not even the question I asked in the title.
I apologize if I'm being a bit blunt, it's just a bit frustrating to actually take the time and do research and narrow down our questions so we don't waste anyone's time, and it's all for nothing.

I would suggest starting by checking with a dealership to see how much they would charge and if they could activate a unit you got on ebay. Compare that to the price of an aftermarket head unit and you have your answer. Aftermarket it's probably going to be cheaper and your girlfriend will get more features. Keeping the lane watch and the backup camera is tricky but it is possible. There are quite few threads here that detail what's involved. Cheapest option will be to not retain the backup or lane watch camera functionalities.
I'm going to suggest a different route, at least to start, and it might be the cheapest option.
Contact Honda corporate. Ask if the touch screen only can be ordered, through Honda or an independent supplier, and whether or not it can be retrofitted into the current head unit, either by a Honda dealer or an independent shop.
Reasoning: If this part is available separately, Honda would be the best one to know about it.
my advice would be to look into aftermarket head units...look into it...it cant be impossible but the rear camera and bluetooth and steering wheel control are challenges, but may not be impossible. ANY stereo shop may be able to quote. I think honda will be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
