Rattler

1st Post. Semi-capable shade tree Mechanic ,Know enough to make me Dangerous, Lifetime car nut. 43,000 mile 2017 Fit Manual Trans. car was at or near operating temp. when test driven. Engine Rattle cold or not so cold start. Never does it at or near operating temp. Been told by Honda dealer VVT problem. Said fix is 4-$500. Also said noise may not go away, said it would not cause Mechanical issues or contaminate the oil. Hard to imagine that couple seconds of rattle would not lead to a failure. Need some Guidance.
Many Thanks!

It is a known issue with the GK. Some replaced the actuator but the noise came back for some. But for 4-$500 to replace and it bothers you, then just replace it and cross your fingers that the noise won't come back.

I'd call that good old Common Sense.
Thanks

rattler for 6+ years....sounds like catastrophic mechanical failure on start up.....but used to it now...<sad face>

4-500 in parts.???...IDThink i could take to dealer for less than 1000-1500 in great white north

Hard to imagine that couple seconds of rattle would not lead to a failure.

yea +1 on your thoughts!

I had this going on too.
It was the vtc actuator.

Cold starts would rattle for a few seconds then it would go away. Probably went on for a couple of months before I sought to fix it.
The sound only seemed to happen on the first start of the day. (I go to work early, so ambient temp is lower.)
Groggy me would mentally note the sound as it happened. But later on, awake me would forget all about it as the sound was never there when I'd head home later in the day.

A Youtube search helped identified it. Same sound.
There are Youtube videos on how to fix it yourself. I initially thought to order parts and tackle it myself, but thought "Let's take it to the dealer. Maybe it'll be covered by chance."
I took a video (phone hanging out of the window pointed at the hood) when starting the car early in the morning, as I knew replicating the sound at the dealer would likely not happen.
I went to the dealer and said that it was the vtc actuator because "My oil change guy told me what was up because his wife has the same car".
Dealer rep showed the video to the mechanic. Mechanic said "It's the vtc actuator."
Initial quote was $1,200. My paled expression flipped when the rep told me that it was covered though. (2019 bought in 2018 with 43k miles)
Took a couple of days to complete. Luckily, I could borrow a car at the time.
I thought that the car was outside of warranty. Goodwill warranty maybe?
Anyway. No rattle noise at start up anymore. Yay Honda dealer.

Thanks to all who contributed. If I knew it wouldn't come back I'd ante up . May look into a fuel pump kill switch idea to build a little oil pressure before firing up. Love the Car Hate the noise.

That's kind of like saying "I have cancer and I could have an operation to remove it but it might someday come back so I'm going to do nothing."

If you can afford it, get it done.
