I still don't see the point of a 6 speed tranny for a 130HP car. Is it making that much of a difference?

From a marketing standpoint, yes. It looks good on the spec sheet even if it does nothing for performance. 6 is more than 5 and a lot of manual transmissions these days are 6 speed units.

Maybe it allows you to stay in the powerband more often? I think some folks were saying the Fit actually drops out of the powerband during some of the shifting.

Dunno.

Both good points. More so from the marketing standpoint, IMO.

HI, new here!
Very excited to have test driven Ford fiesta titanium and it was great! Ride was smooth, interior has more to offer. Over all, ford had a greater first test drive impression compared to honda fit sports model of 2014 that was also test driven.
But..Ford's 6 speed power shift gear box has huge backlash from owners of 2011-2013. And now 2015 honda fit changes new engine to cvt, are we confident that its transmission will live up to what they claim as "better efficiency"? Anybody worried about new engine = new problems like the ford transmission?

I would not worry about the cvt. That type of transmission has been used in the Honda hybrids for a while. The Jazz in the Asian market has the cvt in some of the models. Honda makes some of the best naturally aspirated gasoline 4 cylinder engines in the world, so no worries there.

thats correct, even the old GD fit in Japan is CVT, so have been running that gearbox for a very long time. I havent heard any horror stories of them and have two friends with CVT GDs still trucking.

hear lots of worry about the direct injection on here but nothing of it anywhere else.

I guess my GK is only 7 months old or so but I dont treat it kindly and its given no trouble at all so far.

The Honda CVT should be smoother than the Ford DCT. Judging by the complaints, significantly smoother. I went M/T with my Ford.

In theory, more gears allow the driver to stay in the peak region of the power curve if the driver pays close attention to his shifting. The downside is that the driver shifts more often and during the shifts there is zero power being delivered. Few drivers actually use the peak of the power curve, preferring to keep their revs lower.

I used to race very pipey 2-stroke motorcycles, and they needed 5 or 6 speeds. They were also shifted very rapidly and easily by foot without use of a clutch.

Modern cars have very broad powerbands by comparision and any more than five gears is more for marketing than for anything else. Since the new Fit's 6th gear is the same as the old 5th all the 6-speed means is that the driver will be rowing the lever back and forth more.

I would have been happy if the Fit's 6th was a taller overdrive for cruising on level highways, but for that it looks like I'll have to get the CVT.

I'm not quite ready to buy a car powered by gerbils on meth. Too many highly stressed parts rotating too fast to expect decent longevity.

I see this car as a rather blatant attempt to score a good number on the EPA cycle without much regard to real-world use. Few drivers have been able to match the advertised numbers in actual use.

Not a quick-shifter operated clutch?

No, these were dirt bikes, no fancy gizmos required.

I ended up buying a 1L Fiesta on Wednesday.

Thus far I'm averaging 46 MPG in mixed driving, without hypermiling, A/C on most of the time.

Car will also destroy a Fit in terms of acceleration, all while being luxury car quiet.

for real? its listed as 7hp down and about half a second slower to 60mph than the fit. That doesnt sound like destroying to me?

You are right, and not to mention, the Fiesta has less cargo room and back seat comfort for anyone who is tall will not be happy. Fiesta has a number of issues with reliability, and when the time comes to sell it, it will not hold the same value as a Fit. Guess we won't see him again on this forum.

Peak HP != HP under the curve

Real world != track testing the limits

This.

Drive the two cars back-to-back. Tell me that the Fiesta isn't quicker in REAL WORLD situations. I literally got out of a 2012 5MT and into my Fiesta, which I was gentle with b/c it only had 26 miles on it; still the difference was clear.

Dont think Ill ever get the chance to drive one as I dont think they are sold here. One thing to note is that the GE is about the same power or maybe a little less and not surprisingly slower than the GK (as the Fiesta is)

Hey Mike...Why are you still here and not on the Fiesta forum since you no longer want to buy the Fit, and want to bad mouth it so much ?
