I have seen engines wear out from not having enough oil, but I don't think I've ever seen one wear out exceptionally quickly from longish oil change intervals provided that proper maintenance was otherwise provided. In any case, the general trend around here for modern cars is for rust to destroy a car's body and framework before the engine dies.

You are not going to harm an engine with unnecessarily frequent oil changes, of course; but it's still superfluous and wasteful of one's time and money.
