Ouch! First "ding"/dent - Fix or not?

Sheesh! It had to happen some time.

The car was parked very close to a raised balcony and opening the rear passenger door today, the door hit the wooden corner of the balcony, causing a dimple/dent below the door handle. The paint is intact.

First blemish. Ouch.

I know the following question is somewhat subjective but...
Should I fix it or leave it?

If it's relatively easy to fix (myself?) and inexpensive, I may give it a try. Otherwise, live and learn and I'll convince myself that it adds to the character of our new Fit.

Looking forward to your thoughts/advice

we need to see the dent to give you advice.

one word of caution, is if you try and fix it yourself, make sure you warm the paint up, and you can easily crack the paint when popping the dent back. just an fyi...

Sorry for the OUCH!

But at least you can't blame it on an errant shopping cart or guy/gal not paying attention or giving a crap about someone elses car- when they open up their door at a store, etc.- it just happened.

Check your insurance policy. They may have zero deductible on paintless dent repair.

Thanks for this one. Hadn't thought of it. Having just dealt with the insurance, I doubt this will apply but worth a try.

Thanks to you both, I'll snap a shot and post it here soon.

I'd like to sit here and say that I wouldn't get it fixed, but I probably would. Just because it is so new. It would be a psychological thing for me. When my fit was about 4 years old, I ran into a hail storm. There is about 3-4 small dents from the hail but I never got it fixed. My wife scuffed up her rims on her civic when it was about 10 months old. I couldn't stand it and got it fixed . Just depends on your tolerance level I guess.

When you get a couple of dents, find a good PDR guy and get the multi-quantity discount.

The only bad thing about not getting it fixed now, is damage tends to accumulate over time, and 4 or 5 years from now, you could find yourself with a nasty looking car.

It will be interesting to see if Insurance covers the damage, since it was not an "act of God" scenario. Since we don't know what your deductible is, it would be hard for anyone but yourself to decide if it is worth it.

I have some damage to my rear bumper on my Honda Odyssey, and my body shop guy told me to wait, since there is alway's a chance someone will hit my bumper in the future, at which time I would get it fixed for free (assuming they have insurance). If I never get hit, then one day i will need to make a decision similar to yours now.

That happened to me this past weekend. As I came out of a store and was walking toward my parked Fit, a car pulled in and parked next to me. As the woman got out of her car she saw me waiting for her to get out so I could get in my car, and even with me standing there watching her, she opened her door into my rear driver's side door. She had a purse the size of Rhode Island and I guess she needed to open her door rather wide to get her and the bag out of the car. She didn't even apologize or look remorseful at all. GRRRRR! My only hope is that there was enough road salt accumulated on the side of my car to soften the blow. I have not got the courage yet to wipe the salt away and inspect for damage. ***Fingers crossed***

Anyway korgster, sorry about your dent.

IMHO. A car (even a Fit) is a machine used for transportation, not some icon or love object. You will get dings over the life of this machine. If you pine over each ding, you will be a sad soul, as they say "shit happens". Get it fixed, then when it happens again, get it fixed, repeat. I say don't worry about it. But, that's just me.
