Modern Steel Metallic Color Differences

Noticed the other day that the drivers door(front passenger too) appears to be darker than the drivers side passenger door. Noticed it on some others on this forum too....Is there some sort of optical illusion going on here...Am I seeing things?

Don't know how post a picture.....its the same as the modern steel Metallic that gets tinted on this page

Hmmm.....never noticed any difference on mine. I'll have to look at it a bit more closely.

FYI - Rohmbd, to post a picture you need to use photobucket or other site to paste an image link into your post.

I work with color in my job (so have somewhat of an eye for it), and have not noticed any mismatches on my car. Usually where you'll see mismatches are when the substrates are different (plastic vs. metal), and especially when the parts are painted at separate times, such as from different parts suppliers to the manufacturer.

Assuming the paint process is as I believe it is how would that even be possible? And why only MSM?

Metallic and pearl paints can show color/reflectivity differences depending on thickness of wet paint coat, mix of the metallic powder and other factors. I've learned this from trying to do touch-up painting on metallic finishes.

The way the metallic powder "lays out" in the paint can make a significant difference in how the paint catches and reflects light. This makes color matching more difficult for metallic paint than some other types.
