oil change question
oil change question
how much oil do you guys normally get out of the engine when you do a change?
book says fill with 3.5qts but I got at least 4qt out of the engine + whatever I spilled all over the floor.
also...why are modern car oil dipsticks so freaking hard to read!!?!?

I never measured how much oil comes out, but exactly 3.5 quarts brings the level to the "full" mark.
I can't answer the "why" of you second question, but I agree with you. The dipstick is nearly impossible to read.

I find that the only way to get a good reading on the dipstick is to let the car sit a while (at least ten minutes), then pull the stick and read it. Putting it back in and reading it doesn't always give a good reading. Don't know why . . .
why use such a small drain pan? get one of dese for next time. this is wat i use. makes for a quick drain into an empty washer fluid bottle for recycling.

I got a lil under 4 qts. Approx 3.9 with oil trapped in the oil filter when I did my 1st change. Filled with about 3.7-3.8 to the top of the mark with the filter pre filled prior to installing.
I think modern oil is hard to read due to the weight, and the stoopid orange colored dip stick that Honda has on the end of it.
When checking oil, I find it easier to remove the fill cap, pull the dip stick out, clean it and let the oil kinda drain back down from the dip stick tube, then grab your reading there. If not, it tends to smear the stick and mess up the reading. Also check the back side of the dip stick for comparison.

i buy those 5qt jugs 0w20's at walmart. i fill the oil eye balling the gauge outside the jug to empty to 1qt left. doesnt matter if u are a tad over or under. just drive it for a couple of hundred miles and the oil will be a lot easier to read on the dip stick. i dont do anything special. just pull, wipe, dip, count to 5, pull to check. add as needed.
I noted that my Fit was a bit overfilled when I received it and it didn't use any oil before the first change. I put in 3.5 quarts and that brought it to the full mark.
I have no problem reading the dipstick. I'd rather have a metal stick for better visibility (oil sticks to metal, not to plastic) but the stick provided is adequate.

Like others, I have a hard time seeing the fill line with this lightweight oil.
