Rust Under Lower Hatch Hinge In Welds

Was waxing my 2016 LX and noted serious rust in the weld between the bottom of the hinge and the top panel of the hatch. Both hinges were affected.

Will take to Honda dealer soon to see if it is possible for the weld to get totally detached and let the top of the hatch drop off.

Coated the rusted area with white lithium grease to control rust temporarily.

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what did Honda do? The car is under both 3/36 and Hondacare warranty programs.

Thanks

If memory serves there was a thread on this some time ago. But it may not have been the exact area you're talking about - can't recall for sure. I just went out and checked mine and they are rust free. The dealer should make it right for you and give you an explanation as to the cause - hopefully.

Thanks.

Will probably be at Honda next week for an oil change (free), tire rotation, and to fix the rust issue.

Hopefully not serious but welds seemed to be well rusted and not smooth at all.

This is a good dealer.

Won't show since I coated the areas with white lithium grease to temporarily stop the rusting.

Open the back hatch.

Look at the hinges at the top.

The area under the bottom of each hinge is welded to the top of the hatch.

The weld area on my FIT is rusted (both sides).

Just checked! And yes, the bottom of the right hinge is showing minimal amounts of rust. Would this be covered under the "Rust Perforation Limited Warranty"?

"Rust Perforation Limited Warranty: Honda will repair or replace any body panel on your vehicle that rusts from the inside out. This
coverage extends for 5 years with no mileage limit."

The key word here is "perforation". Surface rust would not be covered. The rust has to eat right through the metal creating a hole ("perforation"). The car companies know that the chance of that happening before any warranty expires is pretty much nil.

Well, I found the answer and it was surprising.

As I mentioned, I put white lithium grease on the areas that appeared rusty to slow the spread of rust.

Checking again before making a Honda service appointment, I noted that the "rust" had loosened up. Cleaned it with clean and wax product. It was loose and wiped off.

The "rust" was actually some dirty junk from the road that sneaked into the gaps around the joint between the bottom of the hinge and the top of the hatch. The two parts do not fit exactly and crud can get into the opening.

Thanks to the grease, the crud was loosened so it could be removed.

I appreciate your help in exploring this mystery.

sounds good.

i do find a lot of rust spots on da side of da car after winter. looks like rail dust and dey usually come off with some polish (ScratchX). u can clay it but just a pita putting da time on a car like da Fit cause its just a dd, polish and random orbital works so much faster.
