Question Probably been asked before. Big bore design---a good reason, or just style?

I have to start a thread to see if anyone knows the answer to this.

Does the big bore, or 'fart can' design muffler have a scientific reason for it's design? I run the HKS High Power on my car, and have come to love a good, quality large diameter exhaust, but it's still derided in many circles as the "fart can". So, does anyone know why this muffler design was deveolped in the first place? Is it just style, or is there a performance reason? I would love to educate fellow car guys that don't like them on why it exists, but after countless searches (here, google....) I haven't run across anything that tells the story [if there is one to tell].

Any help is appreciated.

I just went to a good muffler shop and had a 2 1/2" axle back pipe welded up with a tiny little glass back tucked up out of sight and a 3 1/2" double wall tip..... I can't get into spending the kind of money they want for big pretty mufflers that sound like mine does and hangs down and creates an increase in wind resistance.... My cheapie has served me well for just 2 months shy of 4 years.
