Tow Hitches, which ones...

I was looking around the net a bit, and was debating between the Hidden Hitch and the Curt hitch mounts.

The Curt Hitch seems to have more mounting points to attach to the body than the HH ones.

2007 Honda Fit hitch search by etrailer.com (800)298-8924

ManxMan has the hidden trailer (read that in the progress rear sway bar) but compared to that one, is there a better one? or a more aggressive one that can hold more weight directly on the ball?

I'm not planning to go faster than 55 all the way to Chicago, will go the longer route so I can avoid going up the sierra mountains through reno. Will go through the las vegas, it has a long uphill from palm springs up to las vegas, but it's not as bad as the sierra nevada.

So, what are some thoughts, and what should I get in the end?

I leave in 2~3 weeks, and hope to have all the parts installed soon.

Parts list:

Progress rear sway bar, monroe air shocks, and looking for the ideal trailer and towing parts.

It looks like the Curt attaches at the same places the HH does. 2 bolts on the rear and a U on the tow hook. I have a HH, it works, no complaints. They are all rated Class 1, so I doubt one will outperform the other. What are you towing? I have pulled motorcycles on serveral occasions with no problem.

All of the hitches in your link attach the same way, with the same weight limits. What you called "the skid plate" in your earlier post is the rear jacking bracket for raising the car with a floor jack. If you leave that part off when you install the hitch, the bolts that come with the hitch will be too long. The hitch bolts are extra long to compensate for the thickness of the jacking bracket. Also, there is a vendor on eBay Motors who sells a "Fit-specific plug-n-play" trailer wiring harness. His prices are no better than those at U-Haul, and the "plug-n-play" claim is a lie- you still have to cut off one of the connections on the passenger side and splice it into the stock wires.

Dave:

was planning on getting the wire harness from etrailers. their harness has the connectors to be truly PnP, or so it seems. Also, you're the one that called it a skid plate in your progress DIY install thread/post.

01h4ks:
I'm towing my life... moving from San Francisco area to Chicago... I'm needing a complete weight limit so I can budget the items I can take.

Still looking on ebay/craigslist for a trailer to get.

Seems that renting a uhaul mini trailer, will cost the same as buying my own... SOOO.. I'm SOL renting one if I Can just buy one for the same price. I'll even get an open top one, and use a tarp and bungie cords to hold things down.

-Anthony

PS: So, getting the cheapest one would be the smartest thing to do to buy from ETrailers? since they are "all the same"?

Ultimately I'm asking which to get, and why... why should I not get the cheaper one. IT's similar to one of Manx's old threads/posts on which RSB to get and why.

It doesn't seem to make much of a difference which hitch you buy, but my question is, why buy a trailer? Once you get to the Chicago area, your move is now done. It may be a headache trying to find a place to store your now unneeded trailer. If a rental suits your needs for the move and costs the same, why add to the cost with storage fees for the trailer once you get there?

Also, I called the "jacking bracket" a skid plate 1 1/2 years ago when I wrote the sway bar DIY. That was before I found the Honda definition of it in the Honda Service Manual. I only corrected you to be sure that you knew what it was there for, and did not throw it away without knowing.

You can always sell the trailer once you get there

What's the max the fit can tow anyways?

my manual is in storage, but I know it can tow 3,000 lbs (or so it claims). I'm sure my MPG will drop through the floor, but still cheaper than renting a Uhaul Truck.

And the reason I might as well own the trailer is that I can travel down to Kentucky and visit family. or I may go to Texas and visit other family, or ... I've done 3 road trips, 2 of which have been out of state, wishing I had the uhaul sports trailer. I just see it as a bonus to just owning it when the move will require me to have a trailer.

And with Lincoln IL having such plentiful amount of land for dirt cheap. I'm sure I will have storage room for a second car even.

Not worried about storage there.

anyways, time to order the HH one, since everyone else has one, I can at least be assured it wont go wrong. (doubt the other will, but hell, why mess with what is proven.)

Thanks guys.

They all mount the same way. I have the draw-tite hitch on mine and it works great.

I might be crazy but it sounds to me as though what you really need to do is rent a truck and one of those two-wheel trailers that lift the front of the car. Tow the Fit behind the truck.

I agree w/wdb, but I'm not the person who is moving. Take a look at the Costco online auto accessory dept. and look under trailers. A new item is a folding steel trailer, 48" X 72", weighs just under 1500 lbs., priced at around $950. The Costco trailer comment was meant for Anthony (CuTeBoi).

oOOoooooooo

the cost of renting one is the same as buying one new.... which is why I went with the route of buying a trailer. Storage isn't an issue, I can just have it trashed or recycled if no one wants to buy one, it will be cheaper than renting it for the 18 days. (Kentucky + Illinois)

is a bare metal trailer at the 48x72 size really ~just~ under 1,500lbs? they are that heavy? I have yet to go to Uhaul and see how much theirs weighs.

I've been thinking about buying this trailer.

If you do pull an open trailer, you should seriously consider aerodynamics. Some streamlining could save you a lot of gas.
