Opening the car without a key is very difficult with special tools. I advise getting a spare key made.

First on every vehicle we we I have a spare key in a weatherproof medicine bottle wired under the rear bumper. I probably use it once every three years or so.

Around home we never lock the car or take the keys out of them so we can find them when we need to use the vehicles. That procedure varies on where you live. Away from home in higher crime areas we always take the keys and lock the car.
