Phoenix Gold

I was just wondering if Phoenix Gold is a good brand for amps. I know nothing about this stuff. Just bought a Phoenix gold amp and 2 12" JL audio subs from a good frien for 150... Thanks

Sounds like a very good deal. If every thing is in good condition and your friend isn't out to rip you off you should be pretty happy with those parts.

Depends on what amp from PG, they had some lower line ones that were not that great. If you can list the model numbers of the subs and amp.

For the most part PG makes great stuff. Some of the lower line products were a little more prone to problems but I installed alot of amps that never had an issue. The older MPS, MS, ZPA and ZX amps were stellar. Good power and great build quality. I still use some of the electronics as well as wiring and distribution.

How about two subs and an amp for $150 sounds like a good deal. Especially since that's about the price of one w0 retail. He doesn't know much about stereo as he stated. And as I stated unless his friend is ripping him off. This is a good price even for hot gear. No one stated that this will be even close to the best available at any price. But how terrible can a $150 pg amp sound with even a pair of mtx's? Why don't you pick him out a better deal for $150 retail. Then maybe you'll concede and let him in on the secret that this is either a really good deal or his friend is offloading broken junk or hot gear.

I will concede some by stating that as a general understanding (my own) any pg amp that didn't cost greater than$ 500-600 in store or nearly ten years old. Could not be competantly argued by any one as the best possible amp for the money unless they got I for free-ninety-free! Nuff said.

First off he did not buy retail so asking someone to compare it to retail is ludicrous. Also the equipment is used and if you have any knowledge of the car audio industry, used gear has a very low resell rate unless its top end gear. Am I saying he got a bad deal, no but without knowing the particulars I wouldn't say it was a stellar deal either. Being that the OP commented he doesn't know much about audio, does he know how to tell if a coil is bad in one of the subs, or if the coil is rubbing. Does he know how to tell if the amp is working properly or is throwing out square waves when cranked too hard because of lots of abuse. There are any number of reasons or conditions as to why he should have been wary of buying used gear.

And with just a quick glance at one of my Car Audio forums I frequent I found a pair of Kicker CVX 12s which go for $150 each new and a Quantum 2000Watt amp which goes for roughly $200 new, oh and a custom ported box built for the 12s already, and the price $200 or best offer for them. So if you wanted comparison that's close to the price range he paid there is a good one.

Again, not saying he did or did not get a good deal just asking for the model numbers to gauge which PG amp it is because as I said some of the lower end models were not up to the same quality of the phoenix gold name. Such as this one here; PHOENIX GOLD OCTANE R5.0:1 CAR AMP AMPLIFIER 500W NEW: eBay Motors (item 130429459662 end time Oct-07-10 19:11:22 PDT)

Korean or china built with lesser quality components than used in say the MS or ZX Titanium series amplifiers. After 20+ years in the Car Audio industry, you learn a thing or two.

Yeah my point was that he paid $150 total.
