suspension stuff

alright i just ordered a progress 22mm sway bar...
i'm also planning on skunk2 pro-c coilovers, wr rear cage, wr tie bars, and a c pillar bar...

power wise, i'd have i/h/im/bpipe/stock exhaust.... so figure maybe a 13whp gain. i'd like to keep 15's, or go with 16's, but what would be the most effective tire setup to somewhat maintain the same rotational mass and weight and not slow down the car for tires?

i was thinking on a 15x7 rim, 205/40/15 would offer a contact patch, and not slow down the car too much due to a bigger tire.

specs for the alignments / coilovers would be as follows..

8kg/448lb front
7kg/392lb rear
-1.5 camber front
-1.0 camber rear
toe ???? (suggestions?)
1.25in drop all around

this is going to be my daily driver, but aggressive camber doesn't really matter as i'll probably due a few spirited runs a week.

please chime in with suggestions on suspension, alignment, and tire setups please.

thanks!

those springs are pretty stiff for this car especially for a dd.

toe wise, probably zero up front and total 0.30 on the rear. i say
probably because i dont know how your car's going to run with those
c/o's and progress swaybar.

tires... with such spring rates, you might want to opt for 195/50/15's
which are still smaller than stock. otherwise it might be a harsh ride.
wont know until you try it though... you should setup your car the
way you want it to baseline it, and then trial and error to fine tune.
that's the best way.

ken, are you running coilovers? if so, specs?

i was reading about jsensk or whatever on his pro-c coilover follow up... he loves it and apparently a 6 setting of 12 is very streetable and 3 is close to stock damper setting but a better rebound.. and everyone that's gotten pro-c's love them... obviously they're still pretty new, and not many good company's make coilovers for the fit that are worth buying aside from the obvious (spoon, etc)...

comfort isn't really too big of an issue. i dd'd a fully gutted civic with no heater core, caged, and racing seats every day. and it was fine. i never had an issue with being too uncomfortable with driving, as long as i enjoyed driving the car. and how can i not enjoy a 18g gsr civic?

by harsh ride, what do you mean?

First, I'd ditch the 205/40x15's. The diameter is 21.45" while stock is 23.44. The smaller the diameter the smaller the 'tire patch'
Even for dragging thats too low, especially with 1.5" drop. I'd recommend 205/50x15's (23.07) on 45 mm offset wheels, the lighter the better and there are some good ones out there. And of course you want to choose a semicomp tire with light weight which is more important - use TireRack specs for weights. Remember the lighter weight at the outside diameter is most beneficial to reduce rotating mass resisting acceleration. And going a little smaller on diameter helps enormously when going wider on tire patch to reduce rolling ressistance as well as weight at radius.
Our dragster compatriots think zero toe is the right thing all around as aell as no more tham 1 degree negative camber and as much caster as you can get without modding.
But don't expect to outdrag some old Pinto unless its really sick.

hey, is this some sort of trap to make me say things that constitute
spammish? jk jk i think im going to post my setup in the
sig later on today. but yah, i am running coilovers and the spring rates
are MUCH softer 5K front / 3K rear. and no, the car does not understeer.

looking at your previous ride and you being okay with some discomfort,
i say stick with your current idea for now and use that as a baseline.
i had a heavily modded prelude in the past that was stiff... it felt
great in those earlier days but now a days (not sure wat it is, cant
be older age... ) i like my ride to have comfort and good suspension
travel to feel the car's dynamics through the suspension stroke.

i recommend you do the c/o's you mentioned without the rear swaybar
first to see how the car runs and decide whether you need it or not.
i had one on, but later removed it cause the car was giving me this
windup feel through the steering when i went through turns. it felt like
a long tramline pull while i accelerated. car does not have tracking issues
in the wind even though my spring rates are lower. yes, they are linear
rate springs.

damn ken.
you must really need comfort more than handling :P 5k/3k is way too soft for me. you never said what brand coilovers you had either :P
dammit. i ordered the rear sway bar first. i'm gettng the pro-c's sometime in the next month or two. i just gotta bust my ass and start working

mahout, you're using the term "diameter" very loosely and i can't figure out what you're describing by using that term. do you mean the width of the tire or the sidewall or what? and can you please explain more about less weight at the "outside diameter" ? i'm not understanding what you mean. also, i'm going to be a quarter of an inch of a 1.5 drop, so i should have a little more room.

i'm never going to drag race the car. it'll never be fast enough. i probably won't even be able to beat my friend's 91 corolla.

yah, i can't stand my coffee cup jittering in the cup holder in the morning while driving to work.

my ride is like factory. seriously, it's soft and comfy yet not mushy,
undulating, or sloppy. almost feels like a variable damper.

but from the sounds of it, you need something more race oriented.

hey, i posted my setup in the sig so that i dont get blamed for spammish
behavior.

sorry for the late response.
and yes, i do need something more race oriented. have you used any other coilovers besides enduratech? what was the price tag?

i think i'm pretty set on doing the pro-c's. i may install them at the same time i install the sway bar, or may install them after, so i could choose better rates according to how the car feels pre-drop.
