Car Totaled

I got the estimate for the damage done by the collision with the deer: $7,736. Get this, though - a front seat belt costs $500. The air bag costs $1,000, and the controller for it is $500. How can the bag itself cost $1,000? I'll bring it to a shop today and hope for the best. It's been hard to find a shop that won't keep me waiting a month just to start on it.

What's it matter as insurance is covering it right?

They wrote the estimate for all new. It's a Fit. The insurance company will spec out used. I assume you're not paying out of pocket? I also assume you have car rental on your insurance. If so, you'll be most likely driving a nicer car for the month so who cares?

I would negotiate and accept the offer from the insurance company and sell the car as is. I don't like accepting a repaired car.

That's probably about right. My deer incident cost close to 5k (might have been over) without needing any air bags or seat belts. The deer dented every panel on the passenger side of the car. Is rental included on your insurance? I don't pay extra for it because we have family with extra vehicles.

We don't have loaner coverage on our insurance. Until recently, we always had multiple cars in the family. It went to the shop yesterday, so now we wait.

Car Totaled

With under 24,000 miles on it my son's Fit was totaled by a deer. They thought it could be repaired, but they found more damage, so it's history. Unfortunately, Governor Cuomo wants all car dealers in NY to close by Monday. The dealers are arguing that they're essential, like taxis, buses, and Uber. Up here in the country, we don't have the option of walking places. There is a bus line, but it doesn't run very often. So, if they all close, we'll have to look in MA and CT for a Fit. The local dealer has two EX models, both blue.

I swapped the brand new snow tires for regulars, and I also removed the (added) floor mats and dash cam, which caught the collision perfectly. It was less than a second from the deer appearing to it hitting the car. I'll let you know how this all works out.

My first Fit, an '07 was totaled as a result of a H&R T-bone accident. I removed all of my add-ons and moved on to a 2012. It later turned up on Craigslist for sale w/ a salvage title! I could have never been comfortable with it, not knowing if ALL of the side airbags/etc. had been replaced or not!?

The insurance company is paying off the remaining loan and depositing the money in my account within a day or two. So, for under $10,000, my son will have a new Fit, provided we can find an open dealer who has an EX.

One thing I learned: don't spend a fortune modifying a car you might not have for very long. This one had nothing that couldn't be easily removed.

My 2013 was totalled for $6k in damage, with no air bags deployed. Insurance companies are all about the bottom line, no passion for the car lover
