A Tip for Getting Electrical Work Done

If you bring your car to the dealer and suspect they they might do anything electrical, bring both sets of keys. I had the radio replaced, and they changed the code in the key fob. Now we have a non-working "car starter." I called Honda, and Service confirmed that they did change the code. He had to check to find out if they would charge me to reprogram the key fob. Fortunately, they would do it for free. Whoopee!

EDIT: I checked the part number, and it looks like they just replaced the display. One of these below -
https://www.ebay.com/i/264657546329?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=264657546329&targetid=91686233418 9&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9004811&poi=&campa ignid=9343999167&mkgroupid=103102855428&rlsatarget =aud-622524042678la-916862334189&abcId=1139336&merchantid=101697831&gc lid=CjwKCAjwi_b3BRAGEiwAemPNU6xeUC3hKkHrCHSjd3wvfK eFHBfaEAZY4h1fEC0s-BBq-uDQ7tDu7RoCaN0QAvD_BwE

Part number: 39100-T5A-L31RM, $767.77 from HondaPartsNow (retail $918.69).

Just wondering. If changing the key fob code is part of the radio replacement, they should have changed both fobs if you had the other fob available. Why would they want to charge you for changing the code for the 2nd key?

That's why the service department exists.

Why do they even charge to program a key fob? When I had Fords, I could to it myself. I've gotten answers of both Yes and No to whether or not they can program a fob from one car to work on another. I have a fob from a totaled Fit, but I don't feel like paying $100+ to get it working.

Only one fob came with your new Fit? I have the LX so I got two fobs, not the EX kind. Just trying to understand the situation.

We got two fobs, but we didn't bring both of them to get the radio fixed. They didn't tell us to bring both, and they didn't mention anything when we picked got the car. This will mean another one-hour round trip ride, plus waiting. Naturally, we have to make an appointment.

Just as I thought. It seem like they were doing you a favor just because you didn't have the 2nd key at the time when you picked up the car. I know dealers can be inflexible. They do everything by the book. I'm surprised you don't have to make an appointment to ask the SA a question.

That's two appointments. One to ask a question, the other for the answer.

Another situation occurred to me. Looking online, a guy with an Accord had to reprogram his key after replacing the window control panel, since that locks/unlocks the doors. That's something to consider if you have to replace that. Back in 2010, he could reprogram the key himself. Actually, now that I think about it, he was from a company that sells keys and key fobs. Unfortunately, the keyless entry fob must be programmed by a Honda dealer.
