A few Fit questions
A few Fit questions
I recently took a Fit for an extended test drive and I really liked it but I have a few concerns. I currently have a CRV.
1. I often go camping and bring two kayaks and two bikes. Anyone have any experience with carrying kayaks and bike on the fit? Anyone think I'll have any problems with this?
2. I live in New England and I would like to get the Sport model, but the ground clearance looks really low. How likely is it that I will bottom out with it in snow/mud or on dirt roads?
4. Also, I have heard that the '08 model has a tire pressure monitor that makes getting snow tires a problem - is this true? How about studs? How is the Fit in snow?
4. Is it true that the radio has problems with its tuner in terms of reception?
5. Any other problems that I should be aware of?
Thanks for the input,
Michael

1- i have a hitch mounted bike rack no problems as for the kayaks could just get a roof rack
2-can easly take the side skirts off just screws
4- without tire pressure monitor the light would just be on but im sure the boys on here figured out how to turn if off
5-radio works fine never had a problem

So the Side skirts are easy to remove? Isn't the front "skirting" just as low? - can I remove this as well?
Can you put bikes inside the Fit? Anyone here have a hitch bike rack on their Fit?
1) No experience but I doubt you'll get 2 kayaks inside the Fit if you have two passengers. If you only have yourself then you might be able to get them in along the right side in "long mode". As for bikes there are a couple ways to carry them inside the Fit, if you take the front wheel off you can get them through the side in "tall mode", or lay the seats flat and put them in on their sides.
2) I'm in CT (New England) and I've had no problems with ground clearance and snow. If you're up further north it could pose a problem but I don't see it happening unless you're driving through tons of unplowed snow.
3) IIRC the tire pressure system will make it harder to get it to work with other wheels and tires. But if you get new wheels and snow tires for the snow time you can bypass the system and it just won't work on your snow tires. As for the stock all-seaons in the snow, I only have experience with a modified Fit and the MT. The car is really light so there's not a lot of weight for the front wheels and I could easily break my wheels loose in the snow if I wasn't gentle with the throttle. But it was managable.
4) I have no problems with my reception. If you were in a city then you may have some problems with interference. Usually the biggest complaint about reception is the small antenna which could be switched out for a bigger one if you're having trouble getting a station you like.
5) Enjoying the car too much

Thanks for the reply.
No, I didn't think I could put the kayaks inside the fit.
I would put the yaks on top with a rack. I have heard something about a low weight limit though with the fit and I was thinking about the weight of the yaks, plus bikes, my wife (she's barely 100 lbs though!) plus other camping/hiking crap. Think this will be OK?
I probably will end up putting the bikes on a rack, but could I fit two bikes in the back, one on top of the other, with the front tires off? Typical sized mountain bikes.
Can I just put snow tires on and screw the tire pressure monitor system? I don't really care if a "warning" light is on that shouldn't be.
You guys been happy wtih your Fits in general?
BTW, I grew up in CT. I now live near Northampton, MA.

nope...haahaa. Ummm two kayaks on the roof and easilly two bikes (with released front wheels) easily in the Fit with camping stuff too!
2. I live in New England and I would like to get the Sport model, but the ground clearance looks really low. How likely is it that I will bottom out with it in snow/mud or on dirt roads?
The base Fit is still a good choice, but... either way (i have the sport) and have had very, very few ground clearance issues. I had much more probs with clearance with my previous Civics and new Civics. But sorry...I dont
have experience in your particular conditions.
4. Also, I have heard that the '08 model has a tire pressure monitor that makes getting snow tires a problem - is this true? How about studs? How is the Fit in snow?
well we all now this one now and its not a prob for you...so moving on...
4. Is it true that the radio has problems with its tuner in terms of reception?
Problems...? hmmmm.... I think its less than perfect and stuff but Its still nice and ok reception. I have had worse and better. I think its features kinda make up for it in some ways.
5. Any other problems that I should be aware of?
uhhhhhh.... you personally? idunno....
uhhhh it doesnt have tons of
power...but it does extreemely well with what it has
Thanks for the input,
Michael

WELCOME BY THE WAY...
JUST GO BUY ONE...HEEHEE
Hmmm I might be in the minority here but you might want to think about keeping the CR-V. The fit is fine and dandy, but if you plan to stick a couple kayaks on the roof, you can say good bye to aerodynamics. Granted its the same with the CR-V, but at least with the CR-V you have a little bit higher HP and torque numbers to compensate.
