I guess wasnt sure if 4wd was the same as AWD. Really I was trying to find out it it would be able to get me over the siskyous mountains in winter when raining and snowing. No off roading.

Personally, I don't know much about cars, but I don't actually think that there's that much of a gap between the Matrix and the Fit. On the 4WD note, I don't know much about mechanical details of 4WD so I can't speak on whether it would differ in its effectiveness from one car to the other. What I can tell you is that I've been in both of them. I can't comment on the actual ride of the car, as I haven't actually driven the Matrix, but the space inside the car doesn't differ that much from what I can remember of being in the Fit.
We were looking at the Matrix if our car died before the Fit came out. Here are the reasons we're going for the Fit:
Price- Even though pricing hasn't come out, the Fit is a much better deal than the Matrix, which leads me to my next point-
Features- The Fit has a lot more standard safety and other features that will run you up a couple thousand bucks more on the already more expensive Matrix. Yay for Honda for making all of those air bags standard. This makes me feel safer driving a smaller car.
MPG- Yes, we were hoping that the Fit would get better gas mileage than they've now been advertising, but it's better than the Matrix.
One random little thing I liked about the Matrix is that the back of the rear seats that fold down for storage are plastic coated, highly durable if you're toting stuff on top of it. Though, I think this is an upgraded model that I saw.
So there you have it. I hope I helped a bit.

And I may have lost it in the shuffle above but incase it wasnt answered, the Fit will not be offered in 4WD. This may change with the Full Model Change in a couple years, but I personally doubt it.

Well, I can certainly see some folks here wanting a 4WD feature...but perhaps what you are really looking for (from a car like the Fit anyway) is "Traction Control" which definitely helps out in cases of ice and snow.
As I've come to understand the terms, 4WD is in reference to vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Explorer..or mostly SUV's. With 4WD, some people like to go off-roading on beaches or back roads (and yes, 4WD will help with snow as well!) 4WD involves different gears and I believe powers both axles.
In contrast, AWD is used on vehicles like Audi and Subaru. Most of their cars you would never consider taking off road!!! The AWD basically offers better handling / stability / and maybe even acceleration. To quote an old TV commercial (I believe for Subaru)...AWD "transfers power from the wheels that slip...to the wheels that grip." Catchy..isn't it!
All semantics aside, an AWD or traction control option would be a nice feature on the Fit...but with everything this little car comes with already...that might be asking a bit too much from something in the sub-compact class.

And no I dont think 4wd or AWD will be availble. FWD can handle most snow/ice conditions so I there isnt a huge need there. And the only other reason Honda uses AWD is if the engine puts out to much power for a FWD setup to handle, ala the Acura RL.
