Question VIN Number Translation Please

Elsewhere in this forum someone said if the VIN starts with a "J" that means the car was manufactured in Japan. According to the deposit receipt I got from the dealer, my Fit has a VIN of A04-03004-07293. Can someone translate that for me?

That number is not the VIN but the dealer's order reference number.

Whew! I was afraid it meant American production. Not that I have anything against it, but I've only ever had Hondas produced in Japan and have been awed by their quality (still running an '84 Civic wagon with nothing but routine maintainence and replacements when things finally "wore out" over the years!)

The VIN numbers I've seen recently for US / Canada built cars (Toyota Matrix and Dodge Caliber)...didn't have a letter at the beginning. All numeric.

vin #'s are not giving to dealers until the car is about 10-14 days from delivery

If the first number equals:

1 = US built.
2 = Canada built.
3 = Mexico built.

I've had 6 hondas in my life, 3 from Japan, 2 from Canada, and 1 from England... all have had the same great quailty no matter where they were built.

That is very true SBC31... It is just sometimes good to know your car came from the home land...

Wow, JazzEr...Wikipedia is a great resource that I'm sure to be using for lots of those "things that make you go hmmmm" questions.

Thanks!

That's great to know, SBC31. Guess it depends more more on who the manufacturer is, and not so much on where it's made!
