March '09 Fit Sales

Like most other automakers' subcompacts, Fit sales were down (-19.4%) compared to March of '08. Year to date, the Fit is only down 7.4% from '08. Not too bad considering.

More info on how other subcompacts fared here:

I wonder how long this will keep up. Bad for Honda, but good for buyers? I hear production is going to come down even further. Meanwhile, there are piles of Fits on dealership lots. I tried getting one last week but the salesmen still insisted on getting their markups on every single one of their 25 Fits.

i wonder how many first time buyers are looking at the
Fit's... like college grads finishing school next month.

i think prices are going to go even lower in July timing
when the economy will be at the lowest (just my hunch).

I'm thinking the opposite will happen. MSRP for the fit has already gone up. After the effects of slowing production down, there will be much less supply while demand will still remain the same or higher for the Fits if gas prices spike over the summer as they usually do. Next couple of months may be the last chance at getting one for around invoice. Sucks because I'll probably have to miss out.

I'm not surprised by that. The Honda dealership near me is absolutely full of Fits and Civics. Back when I purchased mine in July '08, they could hardly keep them on the lot they were so in demand. Now its like they have a surplus.

I saw a local news report about Smart Car dealers having a hard time selling their cars now because "gas is cheap". Over $2.00 a gallon is not cheap to me. But many feel like it is because it was $4.00! Even at $4.00 a gallon, there is nothing smart about a Smart Car. They are hidiously ugly, have no cargo space, only hold 2 people and get lower MPG than the Fit. The only thing they have going is that they are cheaper.

Uh, Smart gets better MPG. And the Smart isn't that cheap. but the Smart does require premium fuel.

Check out the MPG at the side-by-side comparison here:

Hmmm. I know I read somewhere the Smart only got 32MPG. Either that report was wrong or it was for a different model year. Either way, a car that looks like that better get at least 60MPG to embarrass myself like that.
