09 fit doesn't recognize my ipod

just got a 5 speed 09 sport yesterday and my ipod won't connect. i have the ipod photo, version 1.2.1 and when i plug it into the usb port in the glove box, the display on the radio says something like "unsupported version." any idea if my ipod is too old?

According to the owner's manual, seems like the oldest ipods it will work with are the ipod 5G and the ipod nano... so I think the ipod photo (which I think is considered 4th gen) is too old .

I have a "fat" nano that works great. They're yesterday's news now and you can find one pretty cheap. Believe it or not I like to watch movies on it while I wait or while on a flight. Weighs nothing. Not a lot of memory, but I manage the playlists from the laptop. The Fit keeps it fully charged, too.

Just plug the USB cable into the plug in the glove box and go to town.

Pardon my enthusiasm, but I am a sucker for a gadget.

Do any of the ipods with hard drives work in the Fit?

Cheers.

As for hard drive ipods, the ipod 5G (aka the ipod video) and ipod classic work fine.

since i might be getting a new ipod, i thought of just buying an external hard drive that is USB powered (no power chord, just the usb cable), loading my music on to it, and keeping that in the dash. BUT, will it work? will the fit recognize it as a normal usb jump drive? just bigger. the reason i ask is because 500 GB hard drives are under $100, and the 120 GB ipod is like $250

I think the fit will recognize it if it's formatted as fat32... but do you really need that much music? I think it'd be a pain to navigate through that much music from the radio...

Confirmed re 3G iPod Nano compatibility. I did have one initial hiccup where it had been working, then returned an unrecognized message. I turned off the radio, unplugged the iPod, turned it off, then plugged it back in and turned it on. Problem went away. I'm considering putting some look velcro on the back of the iPod, and hook velcro inside the top glove box to keep it from moving around.

I like the 3G Nano best, and refurbs can be found fairly inexpensively. In standalone mode, I've never run it down past 50% battery -- the battery just goes on and on. I think the "chunky" Nano may be becoming a cult item; I picked up an 8gb refurb about 6 months ago for $100; now I see that the 4gb is fetching that price -- and is out of stock.

Something to consider on the hard drive idea.... First, the motion of the car will definitely have an effect on the life of that drive. Second, a lot of the USB powered ones draw too much power to run off the USB hookup in the car. Keep that in mind when considering the idea, though it does have some merit!

i could just be real fancy and get a hard drive with solid state memory. too expensive though. but it will solve the problem of drawing power and moving parts to get damaged.

I just bought a 16GB thumb drive at Walmart for about $40. It will hold a bunch of music and it works great. You will not need any more than 16GB, trust me, it takes a while navigating through all of the music.
