I'm waiting on my Fit Sport to be delivered. I cancelled my order for a Music Link, as it seemed to be a bad price/performance deal. For the time being, I'll be using (most likely) a Belkin Auto Kit for iPod -- a charger with an integral amp & aux out (from the dock connector) for ~$30, new. Given the limited features of questionable performance of the MusicLink, I couldn't justify the expense. Even the Dension IceLink, which appears to work with a Fit is a stretch -- it doesn't have text on the radio, so I'd be likely to be using the iPod to control playback most of the time, anyway. $150+ or <$30? Even I can do that math.

That's only partially correct.

You can use other software packages (RedChair's Anapod Explorer is good, for example) some of which integrate with Windows explorer. You do need to use some type of software interface, however, as the iPod's directory/database structure is not forthright.

I chose an iPod after extensive research. I wanted a product which performed one thing elegantly and well: playing & organizing music files. (I have a 4G 40gig iPod. No photo or video.) I don't want FM, recorders, or anything else. For that purpose, the iPod seemed the best choice. The range of accessories also was a significant advantage.

Winamp 5.2 onwards has built in ipod support, older versions can use the plugin.

I use ephpod myself.

Had a Creative Zen Touch for a while, drove me bananas

Can the Music Link be added to the base model stereo? I know the base and the Sport have different stereos installed (the base is only 150 watts vs the Sport's 200 watter, and the Sport supports MP3 and WMA discs). I just don't know if I can add that to my base...

All of the Fit literature I've seen says that the MusicLink can work with the Fit, and doesn't say it can only work with the Sport. Take from that what you will.

Will do. My manual says that the Aux jack is on "all models except the Canadian DX," but apparently it's just an option. I was bummed when I realized I had an Aux button on the stereo but no Aux jack!
