How to fix these rust spots?

I have a 2009 Honda Fit sport with no mud flaps (I am probably going to buy some now- if that will help with this problem).

I have several (around 8 or so total on each side of the car) small rust spots. I did not do a good job at putting it through the car wash last winter.

Is there any way to clean this up so it doesn't turn into a problem? I have the paint from Honda for a different touch up as well as Rust Bullet (to fix something else on a different item) and am wonder if I should just paint over them or place a dab of rust bullet on each spot?

Judging from those pictures, it looks like they are rail dust (metal shavings that are imbedded into the paint). Try using a clay bar on that area to see if they would come off. I find it hard to believe that the paint is chipping in that area and it's rusting already.

+1 for rail dust.

Looks like careful washing and claying is the recommended solution after googling it. I don't think I'd go the chemical route (at least at first).

I tried to feel if there's a bump or indentation and it's barely detectable if at all. So from what I've read on this, I just rub a clay bar on it and it does what? Removes it? Does it scratch the paint at all?

Read the instructions for the clay bar; it's a very fine abrasive. You must use it with a lubricant (spray stuff). Make sure the car is as clean as possible first. Wax after.

It's pretty easy to use and won't damage paint as long as you use it according to directions.

Here's a vid on it.

mudflaps are unnecessary...(wont do any good imho)

I am very surprised, the clay bar actually worked. I'm happy though. What a great product. Thanks for the help everyone.

glad to hear. yah, there's no secret. the rust is from something else (not your car's panel) that just sticks on top of the clearcoat.

claybar just removes it. works for tar, carbon dust from exhaust, etc. too.
