Question etched in glass

What is the serial number etched in the glass on all the window of my Fit? There is an 800 telephone number below the serial number but when I call the number they answer as the administrator and ask me to call back during their business hours (even though my call was placed during their stated business hours)

The number etched in the glass does not correspond to my VIN.

TIA

It is a dealer option to protect under vandalism or theft of car. If your car ever gets stolen and the window was broken to do so, there would be one window without the etched number. Not really sure how effective it is since you can break into a car without smashing the glass and who would look to the glass to tell if the car was stolen. I saw a dealer(must have been his first time) putting the etxhing acid on the windows to code them. He was in front of this guy who bought this brand new Ford. He was spilling this acid all over the place(on the car) when he was trying to ecth it. I was trying not to laugh.

I am surprised that you have that option on your car without knowing about it, up here it is an option for an additional $288.
It is called 'Silent Sentinal' and it is suppose to be a theft deterrent, it is too expensive for a thief to replace all of the glass on a vehicle to get rid of it. The company will give you an additional 1000 over your insurance if it is stolen along with some other benefits, like car rental, and travellers insurance.

Thanks for the info.

My dealer didn't charge me for this "Silent Sentinal" or the alloy wheel locks. Guess they do it to all cars that come in and expect the sales guy to charge for it. I agreed to only pay MSRP and nothing else, so I lucked out. Not often that happens when making a new car purchase, but everything about buying this Fit has come together so easily.

mcspeed...

Hey from Calgary. :-)

My Fit has all those window etchings as well, and it came with the car. Also, all the windows have the dealer's phone number (Honda West) etched into it as well. I think the $288 was for VIN etching, which I quickley nixed off the offer. I would guess that is different then the other etchings on the car.

i used to work at a dealership where i did the window etching. its usually a option but doesnt cost hardly anything and certainly does not require any real acid. its purpose is if your vehicle is stolen and dismantled the windows are trackable as you cant remove that number w/o scratching the glass and they are quite valuable to a chop shop. if you have full coverage i would have the dealer that put it on report it to your insurance company and you will get a rebate for it.
