Anyone know about old style telescoping antennas?

Broke mine off the del Sol, was able to loosen the nut and pull out the mast from the assembly. Aside from the nut it is only held in by spring tabs which I assume make the electric connection to the assembly. But I can't find just a mast for sale anywhere, only the entire assembly (which is not costly but a huge pain to replace), or power antenna mast. Can I just buy a power mast, cut off the plastic gear string and stuff the mast in there?

Would love to upgrade this to a modern short mast but don't think I'm going to find one of those that will fit.

And uh, don't Google "power car antenna mast can you insert into ...." because you will be VERY SURPRISED by what the autocomplete says other people are doing with theirs.
