I know you've done this, but I don't expect you to remember all the
details. I'll ask anyway. I finally got the cover off the '91 Integra
gs alternator (manual tranny w AC). Had to loosen the electrical
connector on top and the surrounding plastic tube encircling it. I then
pried the cover off with a big ass screwdriver.I now see some thing I
recognize from viewing the brush assembly part online. That orange
rubber ring thinghy. I pulled on it and it ripped off. Is the assembly
held in by that l'il strippable phillips head screw to the left (whilst
viewing from below? I'm afraid I'll strip that l'il bugger and that
will be the end of my quest. I am trying to find a tube for my wd-40 to
direct some spray to that screw. Or does that thing just pop out? I
can't get a good pressure down grip on the screw driver. Whaddayathink?
I haven't done anything like this before (except when I tried to repair
a button on the microwave cooker and ended up buying a new one). I
figured I wouldn't order the assembly til I could remove the old one
and figure out how to put the new one in. Cheers

 

Found 2 screws holding the brush assy in. One was hidden from view.
Part is out and I will order the new part tommorrow. With shipping,
price varies from $27+ to $35+. Cheapest place is Driveware.com.
Another place is autopartswarehouse that might meet the same price.

I think you are in over your head.

Brushes are cheap, and my experience is they last about 150K. They are
available for a couple bucks for a pair. The bearings usually need
replacement at that time too.

.....or, the only thing over my head (lately) is a greasy engine.

p.s. 40 minutes after ordering the brush assy ($28 shipped), I found
the part in 2 local mom&pop alternator shops for $8-10 (by phone). I'd
called one place on the weekend and they didn't answer. Too late to
cancel my order they said. The part arrived 24 hours after I ordered it
using normal 5-7 day gnd shipping.

I'm a bit late in this thread. Been away in Alberta and California the last
2˝ weeks.

Soldering brushes on is a pain. You need copious amount of heat quickly,
and even then you need to work fast or you melt the plastic holder. If I
had known about the ready-made brush assembly, I would have bought that
instead.

welcome back! I was too tired to work on the car tonight.

 

I got it back together last nite. I was left with one cap nut (3 went
on the cover of the alternator). Don't know where I pulled that last
one from. The crazy glue worked well for holding the assembly screws,
but pulled off the top of one screws b4 I think I got it tight enough.
Rust kills... Getting the cover of the al. back on was the problem i
thought it would be considering the big-assed screw driver I used to
pry it off with the use of only one hand in awkward positions. A tap
with a big-assed hammer did the trick. The plastic wire holder that
holds a wire to the clip of the alt cover was impossible to reengage so
I twist tied it back. Reconnected the neg pole of the battery and fired
up the car. It works and no battery light came on. So far so good.
