Iv personally had an ae86. I was thinking the exact same thing you are now, cheap and RWD what could go wrong? Come to realize that the majority of ae86's have the initial d/ drifter tax slapped on them. Also you'll be spending alot of money on upkeep and getting it to drive the way you want it.

YES it was an awesome car to drive but not very practical other than a project car. But if your willing to put the time and money into it, it'll definitely be worth it.

+1 ae86

It all depends on the condition of the chassis
Most if not all are rusted, so plan extra budget for restoration.

I know because i have..

I just bought an 86. I'll tell you, I've always wanted one ever since I can remember.

I wouldn't do it unless you are prepared to spend 4k for a gts with 200k miles, rust, messed up interiors, etc. Even more, I wouldn't get one if you just plan on drifting it. Get a 240 for that. 86's are getting harder and harder to find, and they really need to start being restored, rather than fucked up.

As much as people make fun of them I'd rather get a good condition Miata over an 86 if you want a fun RWD car.

alot of great comments...however its not cheap. Its 25 years old. Alot of work and $$$ because the car itself might be cheap but the parts are expensive.

Here is my build. Possibly sale for the right price.

It is getting harder and harder to find a decent condition corolla that isn't overpriced (initial d tax). You will lose money on basically anything you do to it, so if you want one, you should want it as a collector, or because you want to hang on to it for awhile.
For RWD fun, that isn't as expensive, you could get a good condition S13 240SX or E30 BMW 325is or a Miata that will be in much better condition and require less restoration for the same money as a beat up AE86.

Ive personally got three of them. A 86 GTS that was/is my daily driver before I got the fit, a SR5 coupe swapped to GTS and gutted for time attack, and a SR5 hatch that is kinda just there. Pretty much every 86 will need a little suspension tlc to feel alive again. Thats easy enough with a complete set of bushings $180. Then you got suspension and possible engine maintence or small mods.

They really are fun little cars. Not much power but handle like go carts. You'll see alot of people with high end cars also having a 86 in the stable because they truly do embody and have this special aura about them when you're in them and driving them. Kinda like a time machine.

You can find a decent GTS for $2,500-$4,000 and they are usually a good starting point if you get them from somewhere sunny and non rainy. If you've got the extra cash I would def go for it. A miata would probably handle a little better and be cheaper in the long run, but the 86 is dear to me and alot of other people and I couldnt replace it with a miata.

dont spend 4 grand...if that is what you want get horrible one for less than $1K GTS though; new engine is $500 hicomp and paint and body is $1000....then it will be reliable as possible but nothing compares to what your coming from a honda fit....
