haha..yah, rotary is pretty harsh on the VW's paint.. but kinda surprised he wasnt able to give you a quote on detailing ur golf.

ive had good results using Griot's red pad and scratchX to remove swirls, holograms, and blending out minor etching.. not sure, but might be worth a try for your paint.

basically anything using orange pad is too coarse for my GTI's paint from what i found. red pad, mild polish like scratch-x, and how much pressure you apply is about the only thing you can use on the VW's black paint.

Not sure if I mentioned, but the wife has named it Otto.

With no further ado, here's pics of Otto with 30 CTX all around plus 5 CTX on the sunroof...

nice. your tint is drying faster than mine! :D i noticed your gradient area around the window is already becoming even. mine is still kinda rough. i was thinking about parking my R outdoors today but then i knew people were delivering stuff so decided not to. left the rear doors open though in my garage.

GAFIT your Golf looks good. That tint should keep the heat down for you on those hot days.

Thanks! Other than a few little things it's probably going to stay like this for a while. Wife wants vent visors so she can keep the windows cracked at work in the summer and I think we're going to swap to a metal oil pan. Beyond that we'll probably just wait for it to be out of warranty.

At that point, if it's proved reliable, we'll tune it with Unitronic. With the wife's commute, that could be in just two years.

We took our Golf Wolfsburg 5M on its first multi-day road trip of 850 Miles and the car was exceptional. Overall average MPG per the dashboard display was 40.1 on 87 Octane (wife hand-calculated 39.0 MPG), with our route half Interstate and half local roads, and 3/4 hilly country. The 1.8T has plenty of power and we really enjoyed the ride. We even did a few slow miles on gravel roads in deep woods and all was well there too.

As we approached a state line in the mountains on a local road, my wife throttled us down to take in the lovely scenery. We crested the next hill at a dutiful 55 mph and found ourselves squarely sighted by a State Trooper with a radar gun, assisted by another Trooper parked to give chase with his motorcycle. Both officers looked seriously crestfallen watching our little red Golf lawfully motor past. :-D

Nice!

Have you noticed any unusual rotor wear? I need to take ours into the dealership. With 5,500 miles on the odometer, our front rotors are the most severely grooved I've ever seen. They look more like 100,000 miles after use with race pads. '

I'm guessing weak steel in the rotors. I'll get a pic tonight.

Here's the 5500 mile front rotor. About the same on both sides. Hard to tell in the picture, but the dark/light bands are grooves.

Just checked our rotors (at 6K) and they look the same as yours. I wonder if better rotors are available from aftermarket suppliers?

Running my fingernail across it is mind blowing.

I've run autocross on factory rotors and not seen this. Had one car get to this point once, but it was at around 90k miles on a heavy domestic.

Looking around, the rotors aren't expensive and there are decent options. Thinking we will run it by the dealer first though since this seems a bit excessive.

some rotors wear like that. ive had brembo's wear like that on my old infiniti and it was fine.
you can have them turned next time but chances are it will do the same.

given said that, my GTI (sport calipers) and R are wearing pretty flat.

I've had some rotors wear like that & some rotors wear very smooth & even. I don't know why some get groves & some don't. At 38,000 miles the rotors on my GTI are still nice & smooth.

I'm not a fan of resurfacing rotors. Removing metal makes them more susceptible to warping. I usually replace pads & rotors together.

Agree ash!

Wife is going to swing by the dealer Monday after work and see what they have to say. The material is going away quickly. No way they are going to last very many miles. If the dealer won't do anything, I'll just chalk it up to the poor quality type of stuff I experienced with my last VW and will replace them myself. Won't be happy, but will replace the rotors and pads and move on.

yah, knowing how the brembos were working well on my car with those grooves, i didnt turn them either. was going to replace them anyway when i was going to do the 2nd set of pads but then sold the car before the pads were low. ive heard about possible warping from turning the rotors but then ive had rotors turned on a few of my cars early on and no issue... plenty of thickness at the time.

id just use them up and replace too GAFIT. not worth the time going back and forth. fix and get it over with.

Father in law took one look and said "metal is too soft." He's seen plenty of quality issues through his years at Honda because he was often given experimental stuff by the R&D department since he commuted over 100 miles per day through real world driving including plenty of snow.

He once had a TL stop dead in it's tracks when the transmission ingested water through an experimental breather tube. At the time, they were looking for ways to prolong the lifespan of the TL automatic transmissions. That plan didn't pan out too well.
