With the low-fuel lamp activating at 8.7 gallons used, there's a lot of room for mpg variance by using the pump numbers for a single fill. By pulling the trigger once more, I've seen up to 0.3 gallons more go in.

In the worst case, there is about +/- 2.3 mpg variance possible, if you work the numbers.

So, your mileage may have been like 34.3 and 30.3 instead (first pump stopped early, second pump filled up the neck more.) With a tank this small and large mpg, only thing to do is keep a log and compute the average over 3-4 tanks.
