I don't think it has become a hypermilers thread. Just a thread for reporting mpg and people happen to learn things along the way to improve their mpg.

Well, I've got a "style" update on my mileage results. Previously, my best mileage while driving in a more or less normal way was a touch over 39 on the highway. This at a reasonably constant 68-69mph (sub-3400 rpm), 40psi tires, etc. For driving steady-state, 1-sec drafting seems to really bump up the mileage, but if you're able to do so, pulse-n-glide makes a huge difference.

My test case was this weekend, when I made the round trip down to my folk's place to pick up my 3yo kiddo. On the way down, I was touching on 42mpg before I got on the highway, and I just watched as a steady-state 68mph dropped the mileage down to 36 in short order. Since I had a good chunk of road to myself, I decided to give some PnG a shot. Immediately, the mileage started to level off and eventually climbed to 38 for the way down. I figured on the way back, I'd give it a real shot - and was rewarded with 47mpg on the Scan Gage for that leg. Checking my real mileage for that tank, I got 36.3mpg over 160.9 miles, of which 45 miles were driven by my wife to the mall-back-mall-back-grocery store-back. If she managed 27mpg or so (easy hot-dogging around in the city), the 38 and 47mpg legs are pretty much spot on. That means that PnG between 55-65 netted a 27% increase over my already-good (IMO) results. Not too shabby. Frankly, driving that way long term annoys the snot out of me, but at least I have a good feel for where I'll find my first real 40+mpg tank.

Well, since I received my SGII I used it today with my full grill block:

To WORK:
Ambient Air temp when arrived at work(8:08AM - late ): 46F
Intake Air Temp: 98F
Water Temp: 211F ( i did not watch this the whole time but it did get to 214F)
Average Speed for tank: 34mph
(I was at have a tank when I put the Sgii in so the speed is for the trip to work this morning)
Average Current Speed: 39mph
Average MPG for trip: 63.8

Trip HOME:
Ambient Air temp when arrived at home(7PM): 46F
Intake Air Temp: 103F
Water Temp: 216F
Average Speed for tank: 34mph(round trip really)
Average Current Speed: 34mph (trip home)
Average MPG for home: 57.9
Average MPG for round trip: 60.7mpg

I made an extra stop to drop off a sample at a lab for work and I experimented a little with the SGII.

Overall this is a great tool, though I almost ran off the side of the road looking at it too much!

 

dood... thats blasphemy. now i have to rationalize it by mentioning people who text and drive or GPS and drive. hypermiling is NOT dangerous!

on a serious note:
Is 216 degrees high for your car? My GE8 runs at 182 constantly. Does anyone have a clue what the normal operating temp is for the GD3?
How often does your fan run?

Four new update for the latest fill-ups:
That's 30 straight 40+ mpg tanks in a row now.

In general I filled up one click past the shut off, used no A/C, did a bit of drafting, kept my speed around 55 mpg, some coasting downhill with the engine off, engine off coasting up and waiting at long traffic lights. I increased the pressure in my tires to 40 psi during the 43.53516 tank. After a few more fill-ups I'll compare the average mpg before and after the increase.

Just adding up the total gallons and miles gives: 421.67 gallons over 17147.40 equals 40.66545 miles per gallon.

Finding the mean mpg of the fillups listed above gives 40.62423 mpg with an error on the mean of 0.5311950.

Either way it looks like the lifetime average for my Fit is 40.6+-0.5 mpg.

Fitting the mpg as a function of the number of days (x) I've owned the Fit to


gives an estimate the maximum mpg (a in the above equation) of my Fit (the mpg as x tends towards infinity). Based on the mpg data I've recorded the fit gives a limiting mpg of 46+-1 with a chisquare of 1.3.

Not bad for a daily commute with over 3000 feet of climbing.

 

Well, I filled up early for the SGII and I managed to much it up(I adjusted the gallons when I shouldn't have! but I think I readjusted it.....)

Full Grill Block with the cold winter morning temps in the 30-40's and even temps in the 40-50's. Also, used the SGII for about the last 150miles. Also, with 20% oil life......time to change the oil and tranny fluid:

That seems a little high to me but then again I did use the SGII for the last 150miles. Maybe the pump shorted me this time or the last fill gave me too much.

 

I increased PSI to 45 and averaged 34.5mpg in my MT Sport with an all-time tank high of 37mpg. This was about 50/50 interstate/city with 5-10 mph over speed limit and shifting under 3500 rpm. I now have a scangauge and got 52mpg on my first tank but no interstate travel, again with about 5mph over speed limit and using pulse and glide. Bottom line=get a scangauge!

sux, i rarely get over 30 mpg mostly city (35 mph) with 35 psi on all tires. Should i inflate more? how is the ride and the breaking?

I don't even get 30 mpg in the city - we have ethanol fuel and that makes all the difference...I can count on at least 5-10 mpg lower mileage overall than anyone else brags about.

Sorry but I think the people who are putting down 50+ mpg are BS-ing the board.

 

I got over 4o pretty consistantly until I changed the rims and tires (17" 205 Kumho's) and they took me down to 35 instantly. That being said the car hanldes soooooooooooooooooooooooo much better and makes it soooooooooooooooooooooo much more fun to drive. I done so other things too giving it a little more pep and sound. It just fun to drive!

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you because I used to be like you. I was not a believer until I hit 46mpg using some of the techniques that I've learned from this site but after that I stopped because for now gas is not the issue. Maybe when the gas price hit $3 plus then I will be on a mission again.

 

For those of us who aren't hypermilers:

My last few tanks have been steady around 34mpg, nearly all city driving, gas is always 10% ethanol.

I'm managing just under 31mpg on nearly 100% city driving, and if I pulse-n-glide between 60-70 on the highway, I can pull over 45mpg. Just steady state on the highway it's tough to get over 37-38mpg. We've got the same E10 junk up here as you do down there, and it does suck. The worst thing for mileage I've seen is super cold temps. A long warmup really nukes my commute and I really have to work it to get over 30mpg.

Most of the big-number hypermilers have made huge changes to their driving habits, and that's what it takes. P&G is hard for me to do because it annoys me and every other driver around me, but it's made the most difference of any of the techniques I've tried.

I've had my '09 Fit for almost a month now, and I'm starting to drive it more "normally" and less like a grandma. I thought I'd post my first two tanks (not counting the one it came with). Tires are at 36psi, and I'm not consciously using any hypermiling techniques.
