Doesn't forcing gas into the tank after cut-off tend to damage the emissions system? I heard that you are never supposed to do that. In fact, overloading the gas tank on my Camry caused the check engine light to go on because I ruined the ... forgot the name...some sort of sensor.
^^^^^^^^ For the miles/tank bragging rights, of course. Personally, I think the miles/gallon number is a heck of a lot more important, and I don't overfill my tank. I put the gas pump on the lowest speed notch, and I stop when it clicks off; my evap canister is safe.
Getting 44+ mpg right now, so I'm going over 400 miles before the light even comes on. This last tank was 47+, 433 miles on 9.1 gallons.
Personally, I don't see any difference between filling your tank to the top of the filler neck and driving around with a 5 gallon gas can in your car, refilling part way through, except that the first method is bad for your evap can.

explain!
I guess I'm ignorant so what's an evap can? ignorant # 2, why would you carry the 5 gallon can? So you can post pics of your trip odometer with a high #? I'm not trying to piss anyone off but just want answers.
#2: That's exactly my point. MPG is much more significant than miles/tank, especially when you are inflating the miles/tank number by cramming more gas into the system than it is designed for (or than is good for it). Until I see 500 miles on 9.3 gallons, I'm not impressed.

.Actually, it is not just about speed but about P&G and FAS. Most of my commute I wold say 48mi out of the 58 is highway with only ~8miles of it actual interstate and the other 40miles is local highway with some stoplights.
For my last tank the slowest I went on the local highway was 45mph and the fastest was 60mph(I did not stay here at any length of time because I "glide" down to say 45mph)
70% of my commute is posted 70mph I-95. That's the biggest issue for my Eco. I can get +60 on the roads off the Interstate looking at my SG
It's a relative item.
I think if you rode with me Shawn and a few others that work hard at these goals, you would be very surprised how slow one can go.
I drive slower than turtles

Just got back from a trip to near Boone, NC from Nashville. Our base manual '08 Fit took two people, three Beagles, and gear for a week. Total trip was about 750 miles and we averaged 47.03 mpg. Our primary concern was getting gas. Things were very tight when we left and we were lucky to fill the tank. Things were a little better in eastern TN and NW NC. Total mileage on the Fit is now a little over 5,000 miles. My previous long trip our to Colorado gave an average of slightly over 45 mpg.
at what speeds? to achieve that FE you'd have to be going unbearably slow for that distance.
i just hit my first official 40mpg fill-up. it was achieved by cruising at 65-68mph on the highway on my 120mile daily commute. i drive 600miles a week. ouch. by driving at that speed to get 40mpg i save about $35/month rather than driving at 80mph. it extends my commute by about 10 minutes.

I suppose "unbearably slow" would be highly subjective. But in the interest of full disclosure, speeds on the interstates, about 70% of the mileage were between 60 and 65 mph. We did quite a bit of two lane driving in NE TN and NW NC at between 45 and 55 mph. We also did some reasonable miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway which has a 45 mph limit. My guess would be that the average for the trip would be in the 55 to 60 mph range. I do not define this as unbearably slow, but perhaps you might. Whatever, I was most pleased with our trip, its pacing, and particularly the Fit's mileage.

Picked up my 2009 MT Sport yesterday.
The dash gauge is showing 45.5 mpg after my trip to work this AM.
I forgot to reset the gauge so the miles driven included my test drive, drive home yesterday, and possibly the Honda dealer/factory techs driving. I'm sure that I'd be above 50 on the gauge if not for this.
The drive included 40mi of 55mph hwy with a few near-stops at lights. 10 miles of stop and go city traffic. Pretty hilly terrain but I coasted in neutral down the hills.
I'll bust the scangauge out soon and start FASing/P&Ging.

I was intrigued to hear that the '09's would include a trip/mileage computer. I had rented a Cobalt with one and it seemed pretty cool. I was wondering, however, about their accuracy. The initial reports seem to indicate the computer runs about 5 mpg optimistic. So, now I don't really miss having one on my '08's.
Blackup -
From what I have read in the 09 fit thread the FCD is highly optimistic by like 4-5mpgs. That really surprises me since my wife's 2008 CRV FCD has never been more than 1mpg off with variations being dead on to 1mpg low. Hopefully, the mileage is right on the 09 FIT.
