I thought where I was is hot it was only 78 with heat index. It has been 95-99 all week here. I hate this damn weather! I think I loose 2-5lbs driving home with the windows up and no A/C.

Let me hold off to I fill-up in a few days. I'm having some doubts about some data on what I have seen/done....

For example today the stars aligned and my SG said I got over 70mpg on my 24 mile trip! not sure how real that is

today
24miles
level ground
using all my tricks
47mph-avg
top right ECO that's 70.8 mpg

I am starting to think the Heat is killing my mpg. I have only drafted like 10miles out of the 500 hundred so far on this tank(I am right next to E but no gas light yet) and I have been P&G and P&C every chance I can not to mention rarely seeing 60mph. I am starting to think I will never reach 60mpg! I will found out tomorrow for sure. On the other hand, the last time I filled up was on Sunday and at one point I was filling up 3 times a week!

In my experience with the SG, trip MPG is wildly optimistic especially when using P&G techniques. I was seeing numbers that were off by 20% or more. Fillup calculations will give you the real story.

I think you and Rich are right, but I'll have my own data set in a few days. I just started P&G for the 1st time this fill and before that my SG was within 1% both fuel and miles.
Based on my 500 mile 48mpg tank (last fill) I do feel that the indicated SG mpg based on my real gas gauge is not right. I think I'm close to the MPG of the 500mile tank.
I wonder if the issue is in the PULSE or Glide? I glide with eng at idle running. Rich indicated the errors he had seen or read about was with engine off glide.

As always I'll share my results.

Paul and Rich, not to rain on your parade but I hope your SG is wrong! haha! NOT really, I say that because I have been tryin like HELL to get 60mpg this tank and I fear that I am not. I will find out tonight and I will find out how far I can make it with the gas light on........i have driven at least 40miles with the gas light on this time. I am so ready to quit trying to get 60mpg since I haven't been using the A/C.

Third fill.
526km on 35.67 litres.
41.52 mpg Canadian (Imperial)
34.57 mpg U.S
This is about what I've been getting on the last two tanks only I'm using the AC more.
I'm very happy with this!

Well, I am PISSED OFF! I only got 56.7mpg this time:

I forgot to reset the trip meter 3.6miles down the road on this last fill up so I have to add it to the total miles to get 607.1miles and I used 10.7gallons to fill up at $3.79 a gallon. I SOOO give up on 60mpg. I just can't do it with my terrain or the gas pump is robbing me. I sweated to damn much to not reach 60mpg. Well, at least I found out that when my gas light comes on I can drive 85.1miles if I am getting 56.7mpg :P

I hope someone else here can achieve 60mpg. I REALLY QUIT for the summer. I even used the A/C on the number 2 setting the rest of the way home!

You have said that before. I'll give you a day and you'll be right back at it.

BTW Nice job on the 600 mile tank

You get better Eco than any of us with no SG. Always amased me how you do that. Also cheaper gas than anyone on the site. The Gods are smiling on you Shawn

Guys – I am quite impressive with your 500, then 600-mile trek with one tank (give or take 10 gallons) of gas. You know, I do follow you with all of your driving techniques (in addition to cleanmpg.com website); nonetheless, I wonder what is your highway/city percentage when topping 500 and eventually, 600 miles?

I was able to attain 400 miles on 9.2 gallons using 65/35 (highway/city percentage). I would presume reaching 500 and/or 600 miles, if 90 percent of driving is on the highway, no?

I could imagine myself driving 600 miles from Fort Worth to El Paso (mostly flat with some hilly terrains at the very end; little traffic, though), perhaps, with one tank of gas; I don’t know.

Damien,
My typical is 80/20 hi way/city and you are right. Stops and starts no matter what you do hurt. But on the hi way speed above 65 is just as bad. Optimum would be 45 or so and no stops but it would be hard to do that on the roads now and current posted speeds.

Good luck

The New Red Fit MT: First Fill at 43.1 mpg

Due to the great success we had with our first Tidewater Blue base 5 speed MT Fit, we got another a few weeks back. I just finished running through the freebie tank from the dealer. I got 384 net miles to the low fuel light and filled with 8.901 gallons. It came with 4 miles on the odometer. Works out to 43.1 mpg. Not too bad for early breakin mileage. We have averaged 37.1 mpg for the first 3000 miles on the Blue Fit, which is about 50-50 highway and city miles. My wife does the city driving and she is using the AC 100% of the time now. I think that the Milano Red paint must be good for about 5 extra mpg.

Haha! Good one, now the increase in sales for the MR Fits will be seen.

About 80-90 percent of my driving is driving to and from work. The rest is going to a store for shopping, checking out the rail yard for work or going to the local POTW and eating(lunch). Now, my drive to work one way is ~59miles. The actual interstate mileage is about 12 miles(I-77 and I-26) with speed limits of 60 and 65mph. Another part ~35 miles is highway driving(HWY 378) meaning a local highway with no exits but separated by a grass median which has schools, churches, grocery stores, etc. and about 10 stop lights with speed limits ranging from 40-60mph. The majority of the Highway speed limit is 60mph which is about 32miles worth. The highway section is nothing but slow rolling hills but nothing close to mountain like. For me to get to the interstate from my house is about 7 miles of small city driving with about 8 stop lights. The City in which I work has a local highway running through it which I encounter speeds of 55-45 and about another 7 stop lights. Once I get off that highway to take local streets to my job, I encounter speeds of 40-35(about 6 miles worth) and about another 5 stop lights. I encounter very little traffic to work and on the way home(I am driving to where most people are leaving from) which makes it easy to go below the speed limit except while on the interstate. I drive from Lexington, SC(home) to Sumter, SC(work)

The weather here lately has been in the mid to upper 90's. It is very humid here. In the evenings it has been raining as well.

to paul shaultz method, i would like to warn people about drafting behind trucks....

if you want your windowshield cracked, be my guest to follow one. ive experienced this on several occasions with a truck spitting rocks and getting your bumpers chipped and/or your windows cracked. so please be careful when following trucks. IMO, i would not recommend drafting behind trucks.

Paul - understood; will try to use neutral (in advance via anticipation) instead of dragging the clutch, whenever necessary – toward an intersection (and perhaps, on turns), that is.

I thought 58-60 mph is the so-called sweet spot; 45 mph on the highway is possible; however, what matter the most is the time of day – early Sunday morning may be ideal (minimal traffic), you know.

I finished this tank using 80% P&G. I'm not impressed by the results

The SG data was off by 17% from actual

Also the P&G was no real measurable help for me. As it's a fair amount of work, I will not be doing that ever again as the results are not there and I'm sure it's abusive to the car over not doing it.

results
529.1 miles
11.325 gals
46.7mpg

SG had about the same miles, but the fuel was way off reading 9.31 as I filled up.

On my last real trying ECO tank I had
500.1miles
10.39 gal
48.1mpg

Aw DAMN! I hate it for you. I was really hoping you or Rich achieved the elusive 60mpg(white rabbit)

I am starting to think the gas pumps ripped us off. How on earth did you get 11+gallons in the tank???

How did I get 10.7 in the tank??? I doubt the fuel pump could still suck up 0.1gallon???

Rich what have you to say??? RESULTS MAN!
