A trip from our home in northern Virginia to Alexandria, NH, 650 miles each way plus local travel in NH, resulted in the following fuel consumption numbers. Numbers are miles driven divided by fuel quantity pumped to refill tank.

9.00 gal. 358.0 miles 39.8 mpg

6.81 gal. 314.3 miles 46.2 mpg (strong tail wind)

6.41 gal. 258.0 miles 40.3 mpg (includes local driving)

7.14 gal. 282.0 miles 39.5 mpg (moderate head wind)

8.84 gal. 335.0 miles 37.9 mpg (moderate head wind)

40.74 mpg average for the total trip of 1,547.3 miles. Our Fit started out with 2,700 miles on the clock. Average speed was an indicated 72 mph, which was the normal traffic flow speed on the Interstate roads traveled, I-81, I-84, I-87 and I-91.

In for today's results:

404.5 miles out of the tank and it took 9.4 gallons to fill it up which yields 43.0mpg. I was hoping for 45mpg but 43mpg will do. Come to think of it I have never put that much fuel in the car before. I documented the fuel gauge movement during the trip because I thought Paul would be interested in it. I must say it was 92 degrees here today. So, the details of the trip - I drove the speed limit which was 70mph for 80% of the trip and 65mph for 10% and 55mph for the other 10%. I used only cruise control and the A/C set on the coldest setting on the lowest fan speed, see below(I documented every 100miles, half tank and E light):


I sat in traffic because of a wreck in ATL and only moved 0.5miles in 20mins!!!

No, NO drafting, NO P&G, strictly CC except for times when I encountered some traffic. Must be the oil and tire pressure and the fact that the motor is well broken in by now at 29k on the odometer, because there was nothing but hills, up and down, up and down, I thought I was gonna get see sick.

 

I did my first fill today.
I picked up my car with 15km on the odo so I subtracted it from the total before figuring it out. And I do not know how full the dealer filled it.
527km traveled city/highway
327 miles
34.42 litres filled (I filled to one more click after it stopped)
7.58 Imperial gallons (9.09 U.S gallons)
327 divided by 7.58 = 43.13 mpg Imperial or
= 35.97 mpg U.S

 

GET A SCANGAUGE!!!!!!!!!!

 

It could have been the hills (hurrah for DFCO). I notice a really big difference in MPG between P+G (I don't shut off the motor, just coast in neutral) and running on cruise. P+G gives me much better numbers, even at 50MPH average speed. If I toss in even a few P+G's the MPG goes up immediately. Getting 100+ MPG or "9999" MPG (according to my ScanGauge) for even short distances will do wonders for average MPG!

 

I covered 410 miles on my last tank. When I filled up, it took 10.5 gal.

I drive from the burbs toward the city, and traffic is, Chicago traffic. Nonstop construction. I could probably make it 430 - 450 miles on one tank if I could drive through without all the traffic.

Travel time is about an hour to and hour and twenty minutes, I keep it at about 60 - 65 MPH, and always shift before 3k. I don't speed through the shifts by stomping on the accelerator. I enjoy the drive and keep it cool, I like seeing so many fits on the road.

Edit: I dont use any fuel extending driving techniques, I am just easy on the accelerator and stay within my limits.

 

For sure not the tire pressure, mine are at the max side wall and last I looked, you lowered yours for the trip.

Not the oil either. In less than 10 min operation your oil is the same weight as mine 20W.

Doubt the break-in between yours at 30 and mine at 6k could account for it.

I'd say you are getting at least 7 better then me under WORSE driving conditions. I do not have hills.


I'd hang on to that car. Nobody else has one that gets that kind of MPG tank after tank

 

New update for the latest fill up:
That's eight straight 40+ mpg tanks in a row now with the last three being 42+ mpg.

As always: I filled up one click past the shut off, I did quite a bit of drafting, kept my speed under 65 mpg, but over 55 mpg, a lot of downhill in neutral gliding on the highway, some pulse and gliding and shut off the engine and costed up and waited at long traffic lights.

I posted the elevation profile for my daily commute a while back, the gist is that I do about 14% of my driving is "around town" with the other 86% on the highway. On the way to work there's a net drop in elevation of about 463 feet with about 1466 of climbing and 1929 feet of descending on the hilly route. Vice versa for the drive home.

Just adding up the total gallons and miles gives: 216.59 gallons over 8235.8 equals 38.02484 miles per gallon. It's nice to average over 38 mpg for the life of the car. I'm hoping to get that up over 40 mpg by the end of the year.

Finding the mean mpg of the fillups listed above gives 38.01142 mpg with an error on the mean of 0.6114207.

Either way it looks like the lifetime average for my Fit is 38.0+-0.6 mpg.

but I'm hoping I'm not in the plateau region and can eek out some further increases in mpg.

I paid over $4.00 per gallon for the first time ever filling up my Fit ($4.15 per gallon to be precise). Fortunately, with the mpg I've been getting I'm still getting about ten miles per dollar which is better than the best result I ever had while driving the 1998 Honda Passport (20.9+-0.1 mpg on the same commute) which my 2008 Fit replaced.

 

Same as always. (1 sec drafting, 50psi tires, less than 65mph) but more coasting with eng off into a required stop.

Pump clicked off first at 9.2 gal, I restarted it leaned back to put the CC away and got a gas bath .

I estimated 53-55 MPG for the tank but I'll never know now. 10.877 gal in the tank and on the ground and whatever was sucked back up the nozzle's vapor recovery. I'm not pumping any more than $1 after the first click from now on.

Thanks Paul. I think that was the last tank of the spring "no A/C." season. And that was done with 2 of 4 windows open about 2" and an ice pack under my seatbelt.

Your trend looks great, how much A/C use is involved?

 

My commute on this fill was 80%, 50 miles runs on I-95 and although I did not track of A/C use, I'd guess 20%

It's smoken hot here now. My windows are down a great deal, but right about the time the SG air in reads 105F the AC has to come on. I'm still good for the AM drive with no A/C

Rich. If you had to guess, how much of the 14% gain in my eco over the last 4 months was from the car breaking in? I'm just under 6k miles now.

I encountered that today when to I filled up. 1st click for me too. I think the auto shut off at this gas station was screwed up. I estimate some where around 42 mpg for me and that was using A/C full blast while going 75mph for about 220 miles(carowinds and back). It has been over 101 degrees here ever since Wednesday. I hate the damn summer heat in the SC.

 

It's really hard to tell for me. Mileage goes up alot with outdoor temp, and I've improved my hypermiling skills at the same time. So I honestly can't tell how much gain is from weather, hypermiling, or the car just wearing in.

 

I got a totally unexpected 48 mpg over the weekend on a trip, ac on half the time, hilly terrain- some coasting where possible. I never went above 65 mph unless coasting. Love the fit
