Basically I just drive alone the I-5 to work, temp in the 70-80s, clear skies (everyday here in SoCal), driving alone with no cargo, no AC, windows closed.

2nd full tank

Just filled up on 2nd tank.

397.3 miles
10.115 gal
39.28 mpg based on miles and tank fill
Car has about 900 miles now

70% free-way at 65 no A/C
Shift between 2000 and 3500 this tank
Slow acceleration

E light came on a 265
could of made 400 miles.

I filled to the Auto cut off than one more auto cut off. This time the 2nd shot took maybe 2 to 3 sec. That was way longer than other 2 times I filled.

Checking the numbers. follow this

10.8 tank soec
9.1 till E light spec

used 10.115g or 1.015g into the 1.7 gal reserve

@38mpg that 1.015 is about 38 miles

Saw the E light at 365 and
drove 397 or 30 miles into the reserve

38/30 = 1.26 gal or pretty close to the 1.015 based on fill and light.

That's consistent with last fill doing samething

Scanner read about 38 for the tank so I adjusted it up 3.3%

I'm very pleased

50/50 Highway/City, Light Acceleration (mostly), Top speed 70ish, 90% Flat, 10% Hills, No AC.
The jump to 36 MPG was just after an oil change, with significantly more long distance driving than the others (more highway miles), and babying it to try and coax more MPG's.

Yet another week of (90%) highway driving (10% city driving) keeping my speed at or below 70 mph and another good week. I haven't posted for a while, but I've been keeping track of things (although my wife forgot to write down the mileage on one fillup ) and here's how things stand for me and my 2008 Fit 5MT:
  • gallons miles mpg driving speed
  • 9.423 297.50 31.57 ~80mph
  • 7.938 273.90 34.50 ~80mph
  • 9.566 332.90 34.80 ~80mph
  • 9.092 298.70 32.85 ~80mph
  • 9.195 309.00 33.61 ~80mph
  • 8.923 324.40 36.36 ~70mph
  • 8.469 315.80 37.29 ~70mph
  • 8.799 316.80 36.00 ~70mph
  • 8.613 323.00 37.50 ~70mph
  • 8.421 313.10 37.18 ~70mph
  • 9.405 345.20 36.70 ~70mph
  • 9.002 352.70 39.18 ~70mph

The overall results for the life of the Fit to date is: 35.63+-0.61 mpg. I'm hoping by using some "hypermileage" tricks and a little luck (and driving a little slower) I can crack the 40 mpg barrier one week. Unfortunately, I have to drive up a hill of about 1000 feet to get home every evening and coasting down doesn't equal driving up.

Looking at my results and some of the things posted here makes me thing two things: speed does matter a lot and there looks to be some sort of break in period for this particular Fit or it's driver. If I plot the mpg as a function of the date (which is a reflection of the age of the car and the miles it's been driven) I see a nice rise in the mpg which remains even after I correct for the driving speed.

For some comparison, I used to drive a 1996 Civic 5MT and from mid-2002 through mid 2005 (at which time it was stolen and burned ) driving about 40% highway and 60% city it got 30.74+-0.18 mpg.

Driving my wife's 1998 Passport on the same route for about six months yielded 15.34+-0.35 mpg. When I switched jobs and started driving the 90% highway and 10% city route I do now, the Passport got 20.87+-0.11 mpg. If the price of gasoline goes up a bit (and it will) and I keep getting close to 40 mpg with the Fit, I'll break even on the cost of the Fit (monthly payments plus gasoline bill) and the Passport (gasoline bill).

Finally, our 2006 Odyssey averages 18.40+-0.26 mpg (20% highway and 80% city driving) from the time we bought it (right after the untimely demise of my Civic) to now. A few long trips on the highway have yielded about 24 mpg.

3rd full tank this week

397.5 miles
9.77 gal

40.69 gal
nice to be in the club

My freeway portion of my commute to work is now all about finding a suitable host to pull my Fit along.

Kind of funny, just as I think I'm peaked out, as far as MPG bests, I find a tad more laying around.

Wow! Everyone has gotten some pretty nice mileage out of the fit. I drive 90% on the interstate and the rest in the city. I have only maxed out at 35.5mpg and that's going 60mph on the interstate all week (no city driving). My fit (base model, 5-spd) only has 12,500 miles on it. Before I got the fit, I drove an 06' SI where I got 33-34mpg cruising at 65mph on the hwy. What can I do to help increase my mpg? I live in WI, so that weather hasn't been that good. Also I do drive up 2-big hills on my commute. I would like to hit the 37-40mpg mark without going 50mph. I have been trying to keep my speed at 60-65mph, which keeps my rpm at aroung 3K. Thanks in advance.

How much stop-n-go traffic do you go through on your way to work? When do you upshift? That can make a big difference in FE.

Took the Fit on a 1200 mile round trip over a long weekend...Tulsa to San Antonio. Cold start (18F) to the drive on Saturday...and averaged about 37 mph on the trip down.

Coming back was warmer...had a tailwind...no A/C and cruise control around 70 mph most of the way. I knew the Fit was doing good when I hit around 215 miles at the half full mark. Got 40.1 mpg. Not bad considering I only have 4500 miles on the thing.

Add me to the 40 mpg club.

I'm in Minneapolis, and I've noticed a big decrease in milage when it's cold outside (and it gets cold up here, often WELL below zero, ~-20 F). This has happened on every car I've ever owned, but since I've been keeping track more closely with the Fit, I notice it more now.....

I've gotten as low as 28.5 on my Sport MT during a really cold snap (10 mile commute, 1/2 heavy traffic stop and go, rest freeway). I generally 34 average mixed driving, 36-37 freeway only during non winter months, more like 30-32 in the coldest months.

From other posts, it seems like mileage starts dropping off after 60-65 b/c the Fit isn't exactly the most aerodynamic car out there , so I'm guessing somewhere between 50-65 is the sweet spot for best MPG.

As others have said, throttle pressure seems to be the biggest robber of mpg. Don't mash the pedal, shift at around 3k (2.5 if you want to granny it), and you should be fine. I'm sure your milage will get better as the weather warms up...

Thanks for all the good info. Most of my driving (90% on the interstate, 10% around town) is generally for work. I've milked it one week w/driving only to and from work, shifting at 2500rpm, keeping it at a steady 60mpg (no cruise), and only getting 35.8mpg. Every morning I start the car for about 5-mins before I leave for work and before I leave from work. For the last 3wks, I've been getting to about 320 miles for about 9galllons. And yes, I agree that the Fit isn't the most aerodynamic car. I got it past 80mph and it felt like I hit strong head wind.

From my Scan Gauge learning here are a few thing you can do to get 40+ easy.
  1. Stop the 5 min warm up. Just start it and dive
  2. When on the Freeway start drafting (1 sec back) any big truck you can find. It will not matter if they go 70 but pick a hots that is 70 or less.
I assure you you will get results. Try it and let me know.

I doubt that not warming up the car at least 5 mins before heading out is a good idea for any car.

The drafting idea sounds logical but drafting behind semi's isnt exactly a good idea for safety reasons in my view.

Im not too obsessed with gas mileage on my car. I dont get near the Fit's gas mileage peak efficiency mainly cause I do almost all my driving in the city and I can only take so much shifting at 2.5 to 3k RPM's especially in the first and second gears.

I will be changing my oil soon with Motul 8100 as well as swapping the stock oil filter for a HAMP one so we will see if that equates to at least +1 mpg increase.

That's 1 sec drafting and without a doubt, if you can't pay attention your driving, do not try it. One has to know there limitations.
