Mileage reports: Manual transmission (5MT)

Another week of (90%) highway driving (10% city driving) keeping my speed at or below 70 mph and another good week:

That's almost one mile per gallon better than the best to date.

The overall results for the life of the Fit to date is: 34.43+-0.69 mpg.

It seems keeping my speed under 70mph and my rpmn under 3500 is working pretty well.

I'll add some air in my tires. On cold mornings I get the low tire pressure warning light. Since pV=nRT I know part of that is due to the cold, but I'll check the "warmed up" pressure and then adjust the tire pressure to be sure it's towards the higher end of the range and make sure it's not at the lower end.

As for hypermileage driving, I do some of that already: coasting; slow accelleration; long, slow decellerations, drafting, etc. I'll keep my efforts at about that level.

As for filling up the tank when it's only half full, I can see the evaporation side of the argument, but what about the weight. The gas itself weighs down the car which should adversely affect the mileage, neglecting aerodynamic effects (e.g. a heavier car might "hug the road" more and create better aerodynamics).

Who knows? Anyway, it's fun for me to pay attention to this and the 37+ mpg is nice!

One more thing: I read on one of the hypermileage web pages that it took 2000 to 3500 miles to break in the engine. If that's the case, the my engine is just now getting to that point. How much of the "breaking in" ideas are valid?

Hi all, I'm new to the forum, but my '08 Fit is at about 3300 miles. I was trying to keep an accurate log for mileage, but missed a few fill-ups, and then my fiancee threw away my receipts, which I was using for record keeping purposes. I am getting in the rough area of 33.5 mpg so far with 87 octane and a mix of long distance and city driving though. Frequent trips to Pennsylvania (about 120 miles one way) are bringing the average up over my mostly city daily commute. Best so far was 38.73 mpg for an entire tank (on a weekend where I went back and forth to pennsylvania twice). I am switching to premium gas for a few tanks to see if there is any improvement in mileage.

Fractal Jackal,

Don't bother switching to premium. By design it is more difficult to burn and if anything you will decrease your mileage.

I filled up on gas yesterday for the first time and I get around 5,6 l/100 km= 41,9 mpg. I didn't even drive very economical, and my commute is 5,5 miles one way in the city - it can get better

On average, I'm driving 85% in the city.

We had some mild weather, highs 55F-75F and lows 40F-50F, right before the second to last. After that, it's been really cold, with highs in the 40's if I'm lucky. It seems the extreme cold has affected my gas mileage ever so slightly. Notice how steady my MPG was between 9/1/07 and 12/17/07.

(keep in mind that when I got the car, it had only 14 miles on it. I don't count the first 3 as the car was still being broken in during those tanks)

Only have 2 tanks filled up yet, but I got 39.9 mpg on the last tank.

I've just finished the first 10 tanks in my '08 Fit Sport MT. Average of the 10 is 36.1 mpg. I don't do much city driving, maybe 10%, but if you add that to my "town" driving it's probably at least 1/3. The rest highway, and I don't try to keep to lower highway speeds to save gas but do a steady 80 when I can.

Excellent advice, and you were absolutely right. Under approximately the same driving conditions as normal (all commuter driving, no long distance, but most of it early morning and late evening so not much stop and go), I actually decreased to about 32.2 MPG with a higher octane.

New all-time record for me... 44.8 MPG / 420 miles to ~9.3 gallons.

most of which was below freezing night time driving, the rest was daytime city with people in the car.

Can anyone confirm if using higher then 87 octane if that has bad effect on gas mileage?

I wouldn't call one tank definative, even more so because it was mostly city driving. A couple of red lights over the course of a week could account for the loss of mileage. It was enough indication that there wouldn't be any significant GAIN in mileage to make me drop the experiment though. But thanks for pointing it out mrmandmman.

Just finished my first tank on my SSM Sport MT, I got 35MPG! I was so cisced, this was 80% highway with very unforgiving weather. Days of gusty winds and temps in the 20s. This is a great car.

1st fill results

Have had my 2008 Sport for a week now 5 speed manual.
1st tank was 80% freeway, No AC, windows cracked and 65mph or cruse. RPM's are at 3200. 40 to 45psi in tires
38.3 mpg
That was fill to auto shut off than one more manual cut out. That 2nd one lasted 1 sec.
Ran till the red light came on + 5miles
took 9.144 gal
350 miles

I suspect the dealer force filled my 1st tank

2nd partial tank today (to test the force fill theory)
65 mph freeway 90%
windows maybe 4" open
37.36 mpg
took 4.59 gal
172.6 miles
fuel gauge was maybe two needles toward full from 1/2 tank

It's hot out today and the A/C would of been nice, but I'm really caught up in the quest for 40 at least 1 time


I'm very please with the 37 having just sold my 14mpg Suburban
I'm assuming it will get even better with time.

I have my scanner on the way to help me see real time what works.

I guess I need to be a bit more specific.

I drive at an average of 70 mph highway and 45 city. Heater/AC always on. Tires 35 psi. K&N reusable drop-in filter (not sure if that makes any difference much). Constant oil change. Just crossed the 50K miles.

Congrats pcs0snq! Those are great numbers. I'm sure the scangauge will help out even more. Don't fret too much about where the gas pump clicks off, as long as you are relatively sure it didn't stop way too soon. Things will average out on the next tank.
Keep at it, I have exceeded 40 MPG on 5 of the 16 tanks in the life of my Fit.

I've posted this somewhere else but I think i'll post it again here

Fit Sports 5MT
I have a scangauge on my Fit, so it's easy for me to tell how I'm doing.

AC Effect:
Maximum 1 MPG difference. Just turn it on when you feel comfortable to.

Cargo/passenger load:
When I'm travelling alone I get constantly 40 mpg (I'm 150lbs), when I carpool with my ~160lb coworker I get 38, so yes it matters. one more coworker? 35.

Speed matters a lot:
Cruise at 50 (Almost get ran over): 47.5
Cruise at 55: 46
Cruise at 60: 44
Cruise at 65, 3050rpm: 42
Cruise at 70, 3300rpm: 39
Cruise at 75, 3600rpm: 36
Cruise at 80, 3800rpm: 33

Fit is not aerodynamic, and the 5th gear is really short, so it doesnt surprise me the "sweet spot" is at the high 40s mph (My brother's V6 accord has the best MPG at 55 or so)

All these readings are averaged over 100 miles, driving alone with almost no cargo. I also checked every time I fill up and I'm confident all mpg figures are accurate to +-3mpg.[/quote]
