I like yours Ping? How'd you go about it? where'd you get the material/fabric? It matches the GD's interior nicely!

I had fun making mine. From what I can recall the materials list was:

Black felt from Walmart
Aerosol fabric adhesive in a spray can from lowes
Black button furniture tacks from lowes
1/2" sheet of pine board from lowes
Sandpaper from lowes

I basically made a template out of cardboard and kept modifying it to make the best possible fit to go all the way to the hatch window. Then I traced it on to the wood. Cut the wood with a jig saw and sanded the edges by hand.

Then I applied the adhesive to one side of the wood and laid it onto the felt. The felt is really easy to work with since it will stretch well. Then I did the same for the opposite side. I made the seam where the two meet on the bottom of the cargo cover. Then I used the furniture tacks on the seam to ensure the seam wouldn't come undone.

It's great! very sturdy and it looks factory. It's easy to remove and can be flipped upside down

not to mention cheap

excellent!!

I think I'll try too! That felt looks gray. Is it the lighting? The cardboard template is a great idea. I should have thought of that. It DOES look OEM!

yeah it's all the lighting. technically our interior is supposed to be black too but it looks like dark graphite gray to me. At walmart under florescent lighting the felt actually looked black but after I upholstered the wood and installed the cover i was surprised to see how close it matched the interior color.

two other things to note is that I didn't use plywood, particleboard or OSB. I just used one sheet solid wood. of My cargo cover is pretty light. I also always have my rear seats reclined back to cover up the gap. so make sure the template can accommodate the seats reclining.

It's easy enough to make a felt flap to attach to the back seats to take care of the gap but I didn't want to go to the trouble.

This plan allows for many options. The materials and tech sound simple with some thought in the template phase. I've done a fair amount of woodworking and might try it out of Masonite (a type of particleboard). I never thought of using felt but bet it WOULD be forgiving and stretchable.

also another tip.. it's going to be a rather larger piece of cardboard. So I made a smaller more manageable template to get all of the curves along the sides perfect.

Then I used the one side to mirror the other and figured out the length in between.

The template is one of the most time consuming parts

Thanks!

You will have the satisfaction of having done it yourself... and it won't be some cheap flimsy plastic and vinyl crap
