Suspension Problem

Hi guys,
I replaced the front driver side strut on my 2012 Honda Fit. I went to put the new strut on I couldn't get the wheel assembly straight (up and down). I can fit in the bottom bolt on the strut but not the top bolt. I looked under the car and noticed that the front wheel drive axle boot near next to the transmission is deformed and almost stretched out. Would it be possible for the CV joint to be damaged from the wheel assembly hanging down or being pushed up too far?

Any advice is appreciated!

When you change a strut and the hub assembly hangs down. It is unsupported. The axle bearings slid out. You can apply gentle pressure on the spindle and wiggle the axle boot to get the bearings back in place. Do not hit it with a hammer , that could potentially damage the bearings
