I own two 2012 Fits. One is a high mileage, rusted out basically parts car (5-speed). The other is a low mileage Fit I purchased from a salvage auction with very little damage (auto).
The auto car came from the auction WITHOUT a key, but the 5-speed parts car does have a key (transponder type).
Is it possible to swap the necessary key/security components from the 5-speed parts car to the auto car?
If so, what components/modules/harness/etc would I need to swap from one to the other?
It would probably be significantly easier to just buy and have a key programmed than try to pull out one system and hope it works with the other. Lots of times the entire F-CAN and B-CAN systems are different from model to model, so it would be more than just a plug and play job. Maybe you get lucky and it works, but if it doesn't now you have two cars that don't work.
Last I've seen someone quoted for a key was about $140.
Then you would need a locksmith, dealer, mechanic, or good scan tool to program the ecu with the “new”(manual) key.
I think the transponder system would be the same between the cars so it just needs a proper cut and transponder programming.
If you had a transponder that was registered to the auto car you could take out the cylinder and tape the transponder to a screwdriver or the pick up ring and start the car.
There isn’t a way to just swap parts and have it work since this would require ecu swapping and that isn’t going to work manual to auto.
You would probably be better off calling some local lock smiths and seeing if they could cut and program you some keys and ask for a price.
Step 1 Go down to the dealer, provide your VIN and have them cut you a new key. Ask for the 5-digit immobilizer brake code for your car. Step 2 Go home and do this to start the car Step 3 Drive back to the dealer and have the immobilizer programmed Step 4 $$$$
I have seen on a 7th Gen Accord forum that people would swap the chip inside the key from one key to another. What they did is buy a flip Acura TL key, had it cut, then swap the inside of the Accord key to the Acura key so it would work.
Maybe this can be done on the Fit. But again, you would need to buy a key and cut it...
I’ve always assumed the 140 included programming. If it doesn’t a lock smith can usually cut a honda key for cheaper. I had one made for $45 and programmed it myself with a scan tool.
In order to use the key from the 5-speed parts car, I'm going to pull the ignition key cylinder from that car and install it in the auto car. Then I can have a local locksmith come out and program the immobilizer with the 'new' key.
That'll save me a few bucks and keep from having to go to the "stealership".
Thanks again for all the great replies/info. I'll update the thread with my results.
