I've had SO MANY PEOPLE give me DIRTY looks or LAUGH at me because I'm ALWAYS shifting around 4-5000rpm especially in the first 2 gears. I shift to 2nd at 20mph, 3rd at 35, 4th around 45, and 5th if it's a long flat stretch of road. I bang the hell out of gears because I'm scared shitless of being slow. You always see the OLD people taking 30 minutes to get to the speed limit. I don't want to be that way just because my car is retardedly slow. If I owned it, I'd trade it in right now. I'm tired of being ridiculed because I have a Fit.

I have no complaints about speed. To me, this car smashes as long as you know when to shift. I use my paddleshifters to my advantage all the time.

And I laugh at people trying to race me. They look like douche bags trying to race an econobox. Like I told my fiance, "Would you race a prius?"

Hehe. It's funny the first compliment I got the other day came from a stranger. He was driving a Prius and mentioned how cool the Fit is. I think that's probably at the heart of this. The lines look much more intimidating than it is. Tbh though, the car is punchy enough for me and the handling is really good. It's an econo-car with some attitude, and for a stock vehicle it has some balls imho.

What I have noticed is that when you are doing 40/50 or so and step on it the car really seems to light up.

If your car is that slow something must be wrong with your car. I pass people driving v6's all the time. Our car is no f1 car but its not incapable. I can shift 3-3.5K rpm and still drive faster than 80% of the people on the road.

good luck
Well put. I keep up and pass people all the time without taking my car to the 5k range. The only time I get it really high is sometimes on the on-ramp and maybe trying to pass the asshole who wants to ride right along side me on the freeway. I don't try and race it. I do like to take it around the corners though! I really love this little car and am so glad I got it. I'm getting 41mpg on my commute, lots of space, awesome interior with ipod hookup, and a decent engine. I know I won't win races, but I'm fine with that.

lol here's my story from this past weekend
i'm just cruising at about 55mph (speed limit is 45, but it was a decline. i usually speed up to increase my mpg ) There's no cars behind me, so I start to slow down early for the 90 degree right turn coming up. i notice a car coming up really fast, so i figure he was just going to cut me off to make the turn (it's two lanes). Instead he decides to get behind me and ride my ass. i take the turn at 40mph and look back to see him finally emerge about 3 seconds later. Wuss. He then speeds off and goes around me only to have me catch up to him because i'm going 5mph over the speed limit through all the twist and turns while he's slamming his brakes. I didn't touch the brakes once. lol Saving gas at it's best.
Oh it was an IS350.

WOW! He must be a professional driver ;]

That guy is so lame!

I live in the foothills of the sierras and there is this one rediculouly sharp turn that CA DMV stats 15mph from a 45mph straight. i was like hell lets do it at 60.... i pulled the ebrake so i could have a nice slide.. then my passenger got affraid and shifted their weight and the car started sliding like crazy and i almost hit the curb! haha anyways it was a blast!!!

I love when I see a red light ahead and I get off the gas and coast, but people decide to ride my ass like they think it's a green light. I save my brakes.

I have a friend with an a/f meter in his gd, whenever you leave it in gear and coast, it uses zero gas as well. I love Honda

i wouldn't say uses zero gas, as the engine is still running, so fuel is still being pumped in and burned. just uses very little.

when its in gear and coasting, the injectors shut off. but im pretty sure this is standard procedure for any newer model car.

which from my understanding is not technically true. the injectors just pulse at a lot slower rate. so i guess if you are coasting for about 200 ft or so, the injector may infact not pulse at all until you come to idle to begin to accelerate again. but they don't shut off completely the entire time you are coasting. ie: coasting down a large mountain for 2 miles, the injector will still pulse at a very slow rate. so in that 2 miles, it may infact pulse eventually in that 2 miles.
I might be wrong, but that's what I understand.

On modern FI cars during overrun (i.e. closed throttle while in gear and coasting), most (including the Fit) shut the injectors off until you drop to near idle speeds. This was true even on the earliest electronic FI systems (Bosch D-Jetronic - see my web page on this system). Some of the early systems eliminated overrun shut-off because they experienced problems on the EPA test with higher emissions after restarting injection, caused by cooling of the combustion chamber. With better design and the implementation of 3-way cat converters, the emission issues were eliminated and most cars went back to full overrun shut-off.

There's more on this subject in the various Bosch tech guides, and in the Bosch "blue book" (get these from Amazon).

So, follow up question. I'm taking a long trip this afternoon, will I get better fuel economy by modulating the throttle myself, or will the cruise control do a better job than I ever could?

i think you probably could because the cruise control would try to keep your speed up even when going uphill, which would waste gas. you could just decide to slow down uphill if you were doing it yourself. i'm not certain, but that's my logic.

Cruise control will beat you.

Make sure if you have an auto, be in sport mode and manually select 5th gear. It'll prevent the car from downshifting aggressively on even slight inclines which really kills the mileage.

It'll slip the torque converter if necessary (you'll see the revs rise some 500 RPMs), and if that still isn't enough, downshift manually.

Unlike a manual car, this won't disengage the cruise control. When you're on the level again, shift back up to fifth.
