Would you want the light to go off by itself after some interval? It's a compromise, I'm sure.

Of course I can see the car through the garage window—whoops. Left the map light on again.

Haha. Fair enough. But I'm not giving up yet! So I turn on the map light to read my map -- and it goes out after a half hour. If I'm a half-hour with that gol-durned map, I may have bigger problems than a dead battery. And even if it does go out, I simply (in a perfect universe) switch it off, then on again.

BTW, my Fit sits stoically unprotected from the elements on a lane around the corner from the windows of my house, so I don't see that the map light is still on -- nor do I when I'm 3,000 miles away from airport parking while my Fit sits waiting patiently for my return. Oh, and meant to mention earlier: I'm going to check out the suggestion of an LED bulb, which might effectively solve my problem. If it does, let's suggest it to Honda!

The dome can be switched ON while doors are closed.

No map light here so when I can't remember what I bought at the last stop to take in I check the seat once I open the door when the dome comes on.
