windshield replacement

Hey guys,

rock hit my windshield and now there's a crack. i called various places and here are the quotes I've gotten for my 2009 fit sport.

Dealership price with OEM (Honda Logo) parts: $863 otd

Private company with aftermarket windshield: $420 otd

Safelite: $320 otd

Are those fair prices and where would you guys suggest to go? any experiences on what to look out for? i live in southern cali...so if you can recommend any places that woudl be great as well. thanks

Try using Yelp.com to find a place.

Sorry to hear about the rock incident

What is the warranty period of each of the three companies in terms of workmanship etc?

May be a good idea to google independent customer review of each of the companies to see if there are good or bad things said on line regarding each of them

Perhaps, check with the better business bureau (or equivalent) in your area that keep a record of customer complains for the various businesses in your area

I may ask the dealership why their prices are twice that of the competitor and why should you pay twice the price for stock... that way, you will be fed with pros and cons of buying stock or aftermarket... my 2 cents

I got a private local company to do mine for about $420. It was easy and its a lot nicer than the stock windshield in my opinion. I have golf ball sized rocks hit, leave residue, and then bounce of with out a crack or a scratch.

How long is the warranty typically provided by the private company? Are you happy with their workmanship?

One of my friend's windshield work was not done properly and it leaked

Does your insurance cover windshield damage? Mine did. Only paid $100 and Safelite came to my house to have it installed.

To minimize frequency of contact of my FIT windshield from flying pebbles from truck tires while on the road, I made a conscious effort to keep a safe distance away from behind the trucks if I am not overtaking them. I find that it reduces the frequency of being struck by flying tire stones

one tiny stone/pebble can cost $100 or $200 bucks depending on your windshield deductible

I cracked my windshield last summer.... but Florida has a clean windshield policy. Insurance agencies are required to give you 2 free windshield replacements a year. Never paid a dime. I never realized how expensive it can be for other people though O_o

Great policy to have first two free replacements. Are your premiums a bit higher than other areas that do not have such policy? Insurance companies will usually find a way to get back at us, one way or another

This. A windshield typically falls into the category of a comprehensive claim, and since the claim is relatively small (under $1,000), it usually won't have an effect on your rates.

As a side note, some companies do offer a $0 glass deductible that applies to windshields and windows, and sometimes even headlights, taillights and mirrors, depending on your carrier. I've got that on mine

Not for a windshield. Most insurance companies aren't concerned with claims that only cost a few hundred dollars. But if you had an accident with a $250,000 bodily injury claim, then they might make some moves.
