Is the rear defrost icon supposed to light up at night with headlights on?

So in on the way to work tonight and see this:

Is the little defrost icon supposed to light up, like the A/C one next to it? It just struck me as odd. Bonus question: if it's dead, what are the odds that the factory warranty will cover it's replacement?

Thanks all,

Doug

should only be on when you have the button pressed in and the rear defrost is active, otherwise it is usually off

The icon lights up with the other dash lights. The little round orange indicator only comes on when the defogger is active, of course.

If you're still covered by the bumper-to-bumper warranty, I think there's a reasonable chance the instrument light bulb may be a covered item. It certainly can't hurt to ask nicely.

IIRC this is a common problem with GEs, mine does the same intermittently. The back-lighting is supposed to be on all the time with the headlights on independent of the orange light. You could take it in under warranty.

Don't know how to do it on a GE but just did it on my GD. Take out the dashboard center console (not all the way), disconnect the switch, remove the switch and change the little bulb. There's a sticky thread in the GD section for doing the AC switch - the defogger is no different. The GE manual should tell you how to get that center console out.

Interested to see if this is a problem. Mine is the same way and I always thought it wasn’t supposed to light up since the letters on the button look different than the other buttons, and never looked like they should light up.

Rear defog switch is indeed supposed to illuminate the symbol when the rest of the dash lights are on.

The dot or indicator light in the switch is not supposed to be on unless the defog is actually turned on.

The switch has two separate light bulbs inside it that can be replaced easily.

That’s insane and I’m super grateful for this forum. I always found that annoying like the OP but never knew. Thanks!

I just noticed mine flickering but it looks like a pita to replace, Can anyone confirm if you can remove the switch without pulling the radio?

You need to remove the radio at minimum.

The actual process requires removing the surrounding dash, but if you’re dexterous enough, you can get by with just removing the radio.
