Thumbs up Fit 2008 Struts

I started removing the left front strut, I have everything but the top off but I don't understand how it comes apart. The strut bolt coming through the spring tower has a hex slot and a 17mm nut. Is it safe to remove that nut? or will the spring decompress?
Good advice will be appreciated and followed.
Thanks a Lot

The spring is under tension so a spring compressor should be used to prevent it from de compressing.

According to this DIY there is not a lot of tension so you don't need a compressor.
