Was driving today when I heard a metallic spring noise and a thump in the clutch pedal. Instantly thought of the return spring. I noticed no difference for the next few shifts, but then the clutch pedal would not depress. I would have to let off and try again to shift. When I got home, I noticed that the spring had broken in the middle of one of the loops and rotated forward. This caused the broken spring to move forward (towards the rear of the car) and become stuck behind one of the sensors on the clutch pedal, inhibiting movement when pressing the pedal. With my foot off the pedal, it would sag about 1/2", essentially riding the clutch lightly.
The car is a 2017 with 18k miles. Honda roadside picked it up but they will probably have to order the part. Just an odd and unexpected issue. I was wondering if it has happened to anybody else?
So the dealer said the spring cant be ordered by itself and the whole pedal must be replaced. Has to be shipped overnight but is covered under warranty.
i've never heard of one breaking ,. i did replace two slave
cylinders in 16 years on my last car ( the first replacement was faulty and failed after a few years ) , but no problems with
a spring though . the manual for the car shows that the spring is built around the pedal , so i guess they replace it as one unit
BB: same here - my first thought was the secondary cylinder (f/k/a the slave cylinder) but ususally the pedal gets soft and stays on the floor when the 2nd cylinder fails. It's a given at 30-60K miles on 2010-15 VWs. First I've heard of a Honda failing - that tells me the part had a defect. Have the dealer inspect the spring or take a magnifying glass and look for "not a clean" break like this:
I thought I'd post that this just happened to me as well. My 2018 has 29k miles and the spring snapped while my wife was driving the car. Clutch still seems to work normally without it though. Anyway, the repair will be covered by factory warranty, so not a huge deal. Looks like you can buy the complete pedal assembly for $114 (Part No. 46910-T5R-A21) and it's only a few bolts to remove and swap out.
Broken spring. Other half of spring still attached.
this just happened to me! I pushed the clutch, felt a pop and thought wtf .... @44,250 miles in my 2018 Fit
finally crawled under the dash last night and pulled the broken bit and the rest of the spring off the plastic clip. No idea what it is for LOL because i don't really feel a difference in the clutch now, and nothing seems to be affected
Hope this doesn't happen to me.
Only 42k miles, but so far so good.
I have been having issues with it squeaking, which i've been blasting with fluid film (seems to stop the annoying noise!).
Hopefully that'll prevent it from failing.
