lock the car with the doors open

Howdy! Hopefully someone on here can solve this for me, cause it's been driving me nuts. I just got a 2016 Fit LX, and so far I love it except for one giant flaw: when I get to work in the morning, I turn the car off, get out the car, and go to the passenger side to get all my stuff out. On my old car, I would open the door, lock all the doors with the key fob, and then put it away in my bag before I picked up the armloads of stuff I need to take inside.
On the Fit, it apparently won't lock from the fob with the door open? I can't find this in the manual, but that might just mean I'm missing it. I get that it keeps you from leaving the doors on the car open and walking away, but for me it means I have to dump all my stuff on the dirty pavement, close and lock the doors, put the key in my bag, and then pick everything back up. I've already left my coffee on the roof of the car twice since I got the thing.
Is it supposed to be doing this? Is there a way around it, besides getting a new job that doesn't require me to carry stuff around?
Thanks for any help y'all wise folks can provide!

Welcome! I have a 2016 LX. I can't lock the doors if any door is open, including the hatch.

Why make it so hard? Why not just get a small handcart or backpack with wheels and put the stuff in there?

Or would you really rather risk accidentally locking yourself out of the car?

You should thank Honda for not allowing you to accidentally leave your key inside the car and locking yourself out.

Not a flaw. Don't think I have owned a car that would let you do that.

With the passenger door open can you push the lock button on the door and lock the doors? Open passenger door, hit lock, get your stuff bump door with hip?

In a much older Acura Legend, I was able to pull the handle and then hit the lock to lock the doors while it was open.

Of course, I immediately proceeded to lock myself out of the car while it was still running. Had to get the assistance of non-emergency police to unlock the car.

Good job, me.

Yes I had an 88 Accord that you had to do that in order to lock the door with the switch. You could also insert the key into the door and turn it to lock all the doors. I was told it was to help you not forget your keys but not sure how much it helped.

It happens to everyone at some point.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer here.
Other than I think the behavior of the Fit, is far more common than the behavior of your old car.

I'll watch this thread, but I fear you simply cannot make the FIT do what you want it to do.

Can someone help me make my car drive at highway speeds in reverse? This is really helpful in my line of work as a bank robber and my old car could do this, but for some reason these new cars won’t let you do it. I get there is a reason for it but ...

Seriously there seems to be no end to the recent threads asking for X common sense feature to be removed so somebody can do something they admit is not a good idea. In this case, op wants to lock car with fob then place fob in a bag inside locked car then go on with rest of the steps. And I kind of get it. He or she has more bags than hands. But ... it’s there for a reason just like auto off headlights, the shift interlock and the rpm limiter. My favorite was the “can I take the key out with the engine running.” No, sir, you cannot, and I can tell you this flaw on my 1989 Buick did not make it a better car, it made it worse. Ever got to your destination and realized key has vanished from ignition? I have.

Subarus let you open only the trunk while car remains locked. See if that works here (won’t for ge, not sure for gk). If not maybe you need a backpack or something.

I was under the impression the OP was carrying the bag, not leaving it in the car.

Oh... I remember our old Buick Regal (it got stolen and recovered at some point). I vaguely remember the key being like that.

I was under the impression they have a bunch of bags on the seat, into one of which they will place key before scooping up all the bags, butt-closing the door and staggering away. So they hope not to LEAVE it in the car but that is the whole thing being prevented here. If op could scoop bags, butt the door and then click “lock” then they would.

In short the problem really isn't with the car or the behavior of how the fob locks the vehicle.
The problem is the OP has too much to carry into work.

Just tried this with my GTI and it does allow you to lock the car with the key fob while the door is open. It will not allow you to lock the car with the door switch while the door is open however. A “feature” I didn’t know I had!
